The issue of torture and the trial of 'terror suspects' has been talked and written about to death. However, I still feel the nagging urge to weigh in.
If the torture of 'terror suspects' is accepted as a normal part of the justice process, how then, can anyone in the future, convincingly or honestly complain or protest brutality or other mistreatment by law enforcement agents? And if 'terror suspects' can be denied basic rights afforded to all criminal defendants under our law, why have the trial? Why spend a lot of time and huge sums of money to have a non-trial? Why have a trial, if it won't be a trial?
