I was just reading about some US diplomat in Pakistan who shot and killed two Pakistani people, the Pakistani authorities arrested him and now it's causing a dispute between Pakistan and the US government, which is threatening to suspend aid if our diplomatic immunity is not respected. (here's a link to the story: http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/08/us-pakistan-usa-idUSTRE7170SV20110208).

This just got me thinking: is diplomatic immunity a good/necessary standard in this nation-state world or does it just amount to a license to ? ?

Think it's a great way to get a suitcase size nuke across a border.

it's necessary, but as it works, there are limitations to what it grants you immunity to. this particular case probably has an issue due to the fact that the US (and some Pakistanis) have described the people shot as criminals, making them confused as to why Pakistan would not release this guy.
