I've been thinking that maybe post secondary education should be tax funded and universally available for everyone. What do you think?

England has that ? ....for the most part.
But yeah, this is NOT a good idea:
1) Ere'body ain't cut out for college. You hear it everyday. Why waste dollars on people who'll ? around in the ? for 10-12 years, knowing they have no loans to pay back?
2) With the standards of jobs raising, even the regular jobs (like call centers) require at some college expierence. Most require a degree now. Used to be you could pretty do anything (or at least star on that path) with a Bachelor's. No so no more. You need a Master's just to get a foot in the door now, which is ? , cause by then you might by 50-75K in debt.
What I DO agree with it people needs more aid in going through college...non-loan aid. Mostly, scholarships are meant to GET people to school. However, the majority of those awards aren't meant to KEEP people there.
If the gov't needs to fix one thing about higher education, it's retention and graduation moreso than just enrollment. -
Post secondary institutions are businesses first and schools second, if you don't believe me try being delinquent with your tuition for one semester and watch how emo they get. The amount of money you pay per course is divided in terms of where it goes. Secondly, if you fund it then the money will have to come from somewhere else either through higher taxes, taking funding from other sectors etc. Some countries in Europe fund tuition due to the fact that they are wise with financial allocation unfortunately North America will never take that route.

community college is what like 30 dollars a unit?
It's basically free if you can't afford it or your parents make less than 60k a year
it is affordable for everyone -
Non-mandatory universal college edu isn't a bad idea and heavy subsidies from govs for higher edu work pretty well in Europe and some other places (although that is being threatened by the austerity trend), but first they gotta fix the primary and secondary schools because college would be wasted on a lot of young people in the US.

Not everyone can go to college
believe it or not, this way of life DEMANDS that there are kids who never make it past high school.
In Canada is easier to make it to college compared to the U.S..you live in Alberta lil ? you got opportunities some of these cats from the U.S don't got. -
I don't live in Alberta I Live in Ontario.
Anyone can go to Community College.
How is it easier in Canada?
Through OSAP and grants presented to students in Ontario it is more accessible compared to the U.S. Also there are numerous bursaries and grants given to students from low income areas making it easier for them to apply to college/university. In the U.S depending on what state you are in the amount of resources are limited plus tuition is much higher. -
i think that should be a viable option, but with conditions such as the person has to work for the government upon graduation for "x"amount of yrs on a fixed salary or every semester one has to complete "x" amount of hrs in community service. Something like that to weed out those who would ? around just for a free ride.

This wouldn't do anything for the economy but, make a Bachelors completely worthless & PhDs the new masters as employees would try & find more ways to stand out. It wouldn't change anything. -
they should make college more available/affordable for those who can get in. but if you can't finish community college (which is already cheap and available), or do well in high school you probably aren't built for college.

not by a long shot brah -
Well if you are a good student and have a high GPA you will have reduced expenses due to grants and other aids. Some schools even give a free ride to students who are academically/ artistically / athletically gifted. Free post education sounds good but it would ? up the job market especially in a very large economy like the US's.

There is alot of scholarship money out there that most students wont ever know about. I tell any high school student I come across to live in your counselors office If you got the grades and extra curriculars to get accepted then you can find money that is not loans. It will not be easy but nothing worth having in life comes easy. The better your grades are the more money that is available. And once you are enrolled and go through your first year with good grades there is even more money available to you. College is affordable if you know what you're doing.
