Gravity guns make everything better.

Following in the footsteps of the host of gravity manipulating games that came before it (most notably Half Life 2), Inversion seeks to make its own mark on the genre. A third-person, cover-based shooter developed by Saber Interactive, Inversion puts players behind the reticle of law enforcement officer Davis Russel.

Russel, along with his partner, Leo Delgado, have just watched as their peaceful home was invaded by a mysterious threat known as the Lutadore. Now Russel's wife is dead and his daughter is missing, and it's up to him to join the resistance and set things right again.

While on the surface Inversion looks and plays like a standard shooter, its main hook is its Gravlink gun, which allows players to increase or decrease the gravity on a specific target. This lets you move around enemies and pieces of the environment and use them for cover or as projectiles.

This is why gravity guns are awesome.

If you've played a game with a gravity gun before, it all feels like pretty standard fare-- though the fact that some of your enemies also have gravity guns (meaning they can pull you out of cover and suspend you in the air if you get caught in their line of fire), as well as the inclusion of vector shifts (which shift the gravity so that you can be on the ground one minute and running up a wall the next), do a decent job of making it feel at least a little new.

Another cool aspect of the game is the destructible environments. During the recent demo I had of the game, a lot of what was on screen could be destroyed, even a whole building at one point (though, it should be noted, not all buildings are destructible, only certain ones). This, paired with the gravity mechanics, should make for some pretty cool combat situations.

Find cover before it's too late.

Inversion will feature both single and co-op gameplay (which will let one other player drop in and out as they please). There will also be online multi-player of some sort, though more details won't be revealed until E3 2011. Inversion will be coming to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on February 7, 2012.
