Oven: *scared* Gee, okay. you coulda warned me, this may take a while. longer than it says on the box. why you aint pre heat me?

because it helps your oven cook evenly.

Because the cook time is based on the specified oven temperature. Not anything less or more. If you're supposed to bake at 400 for 20 minutes, if you stick the food in the oven and its only 250 well then the cooking time will have to be increased. By how many minutes who can say exactly. So to simplify it, you just preheat the oven to the desired temp.
