Brave Poster Online
Pixar gets mythic...

23 June 2011 | Source: Entertainment Weekly

When US audiences head to cinemas this weekend to see Pixar’s latest offering, Cars 2, they’ll also be treated to the first look at the teaser trailer for the company’s fairytale adventure, Brave, which will make its own trip to theatres in about a year. Chances are the teaser will hit the ‘net around the same time, but the poster is already here, and you can view it below.

Entertainment Weekly got the scoop on the image, which features the central character, Scottish princess Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald) and some imposing stone structures lurking in the mist. “We can’t say what happens there, but they were inspired by an actual location in Scotland that we visited multiple times during our research,” Brave’s producer Katherine Sarafian tells the magazine. “It was a very powerful setting for the kind of things we want to have happen in the story.”

That plot involves the headstrong Merida jeopardising her father (Billy Connolly)’s kingdom with her impetuous actions, and realising that she’ll have to sort out the resulting chaos.

Look for Brave to dig into some deeper and darker themes than even Pixar normally explores, too. Though considering how dark some of Toy Story 3 got, that’s saying something...

Oh, and talking of that teaser trailer? Empire got a look at it a few days ago and can attest that while it only contains a flavour of the movie, the visual style in particular is painterly and utterly captivating. We’ll have the footage for you just as soon as it hits the web.

    Brave Teaser Trailer Arrives
'It is the one thing we must always be'
    27 June 2011 | Source: YouTube

While the first poster for Pixar’s Brave came online late last week, something far more exciting has arrived. Yes, after playing in front of Cars 2 at US cinemas this weekend, the Brave teaser trailer is now online and can be played below for your gawping pleasure.

And what a pleasure it is – the lush shots of Scottish scenery, the smooth animation on central character Merida (Kelly Macdonald) and the generally sweeping scale make this one of the more appealing teasers the Emeryville bunch have put out yet.

The story, of course, focuses on the spirited princess, a skilled archer and daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Headstrong and forthright and burning to make her own way in the world, Merida defies an ancient custom, throwing everything into chaos and fury in the kingdom. Turning to an old Wise Woman (Julie Walters), Merida hinders, rather than helps, the situation and must go on a journey to put things right.

While the film has had its share of controversy (with original co-writer/director Brenda Chapman replaced by Mark Andrews, on the evidence of this, it would seem the Pixar bods might just have produced yet another wonderful adventure. Anyone surprised?

Brave will arrive on these shores on August 17, 2012.

    New Stills From Pixar's Brave
Another look at the Scottish tale
    14 November 2011 | Written by Helen O'Hara | Source: Exclusive

Pixar's Brave opens next August 17 in the UK, but the tiny drips and drops of teasers about the film are beginning to emerge from cracks in the Pixar strongroom, and here are two new exclusive stills from the already-gorgeous-looking, hopefully-awesome Highland epic. Set in unspecified ancient times and boasting an almost entirely Scottish voice cast, this is looking as sweet as shortbread. Mmmm, shortbread. Here's an exclusive look at Our Hero, Merida, and the lairds ranked against her, Lord MacGuffin, Dingwall and Macintosh (from left to right).

The synopsis goes a little something like this: "Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (Robbie Coltrane).

"Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late."

Anyone else think Hitchcock would be mightily amused at the tribute? Or that it's looking increasingly as though Scotland is the place to be, animation-wise? See also: How To Train Your Dragon, Disney short The Ballad Of Nessie, The Illusionist. (And on a personal note, animators of the world: try Ireland too! Read The Tain!)

Brave comes out almost two full months earlier in the US than it does here, and someone really needs to go over to Emeryville and persuade Pixar that these unnecessary delays are KILLING US. On the bright side, however, we recently learned that director Mark Andrews has instituted "Kilt Fridays" among the animators working on the project, which goes some considerable way to making us happy.

    Brave Trailer Strides In
    Pixar's new adventure
16 November 2011 | Written by James White

After a stumble in terms of critical reaction with Cars 2 (if not box office, which hummed along nicely), Pixar looks to be solidly back on mesmerising, funny, emotional and visually outstanding form with Brave. We brought you some exclusive new images from the movie just a couple of days ago and now the first full trailer has arrived online.

Brave follows hot-headed tomboy Merida (Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer and the daughter of King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Fiercely determined to figure out her own path in life, she defies an ancient custom, which in turn has terrible consequences for her family and its kingdom.

So Merida turns to an eccentric old wise woman (Julie Walters) in her quest to make things right. But can she restore order from the chaos?

With a largely Scottish cast that also includes Robbie Coltrane, Kevin McKidd and Craig Ferguson, Brave is Pixar dipping a toe in fairytale territory for the first time. And from the looks of this, pulling it off with style.

Brave will be out on August 17.
