'88 was an amaaaaaaaazing summer in NYC, in general. Jeeps and Maximas pumpin Public Enemy, Rakim, BDK, Lyte, BDP. House parties, "Groove Me," Keith Sweat, "It Takes Two" (before it crossed over), Soul II Soul, 125th Street, performances at the State Building, Dapper Dan's (where dudes would go and get their car interiors Gucci'd out lol), the deuce. It was just - wow.
I, personally, think '93 was better than '94. But then again, I guess a lot of ? that was in the city in '93 didn't get out to the rest of the world till '94 - or never.
But anyway, back to the question:
'88 was the peak of raw Hip Hop.
'94 was the peak of polished Hip Hop. (and the beginning of the end of Hip Hop) -

You summed it up perfectly. And 93 we had an advance copy of 36 chambers that was like our summer soundtrack while blazin phillies everyday...black moon, jeru, tribe, yeah 93 was sick also. -

Ironic. lol -
its prolly generational. if you was there for 88, its hard to put 94 over it just cause 88 was amazing in sheer volume of changes and additions to hip-hop's vocabulary that happened almost daily. Love Common Nas Black Moon Jeru Wu etc but not over Kane Krs Rakim Slick Rick De la NWA PE Geto boys G rap etc.

How was 94 the beginning of the end?
