" Northern California teacher says he doesn't want to hear a common courtesy in his classroom. He's even lowering students' grades if they say "bless you" after someone sneezes. Steve Cuckovich says the practice is disrespectful and disruptive. He's banned saying "bless you" in his high school health class in Vacaville. He even knocked 25 points from one student's grade for saying the phrase in class. Cuckovich says the policy has nothing to do with religion, but says the phrase is just a outdated practice and disrupts class time. "When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body," Cuckovich said. "So they were saying, '? bless you' for getting rid of evil spirits. But today, I said what you're doing doesn't really make any sense anymore.""

THESE ? HATE ? OUT HERE.. THEY GONE GET THERES DOE!!!

lol if that's true about how bless you started then LMAO! I would agree with that as well, no more bless you's in 2011, maybe "excuse you" is more proper.

Well...damn. I had a teacher in high school like that though, for reals...

He never deducted grades or none of that, but he hated when someone said "? bless you"...

Yeah, thats where bless you comes from but his policy is a little ridiculous. It's his classroom though so it's nothing you can really do about it

That teacher could very possibly be put on probation or the school could be pressured by the community to fire him or transfer him elsewhere.

Religionist or not, it's a harmless phrase. Ruining someone's grade because you're a real-life atheist troll is... well... dumb.

could but not necessarily. A case could be made that "? bless you" is offensive to people of certain backgrounds ; in that situation, the school wouldn't have to take any action. If it's a pointless phrase, you could say to use it it is dumber than to prohibit it. Especially in a health class. We all know sneezing is not caused by evil spirits, so why promote that in a HEALTH CLASS. Isn't the goal of taking a class to learn facts and not myths
