Alexei Shestakov served half of a 24-year sentence before attempting his escape from a penal colony.

A convicted murderer who used a helicopter to boldly escape from a Russian prison had much worse luck with a taxi.

Alexei Shestakov flew from a high-security penal colony in the town of Sheksna with the help of two accomplices, who had rented and then commandeered a helicopter.

After arriving at the prison, the copter lowered a rope-ladder for Shestakov, who climbed successfully to safety while under fire from the guards, according to RIA Novosti, a Russian news agency.

However, Shestakov's luck changed soon after the helicopter landed. Once on the ground Shestakov hijacked a taxi, but he was soon stopped at a roadblock by authorities and taken into custody, a Russian government spokesman told news agencies.

His accomplices had forced the pilot at gunpoint to hover over the penal colony to begin the daring jail break.

Shestakov, 35, had served half of a 24-year sentence when he made his escape. The empty copter was later found, but the accomplices, a man and a woman, remain at large.
