Dear Steve Sabol,
We almost universally enjoy the fine, often Emmy Award-winning products you and your esteemed colleagues consistently churn out at NFL Films and usually confine our quibbles to the office, living room or barstool.
But you blew it Monday night when NFL Network debuted the NFL Films-produced Top 10 Heisman Winners in the NFL. The list (and to limit any confusion, it ranks the NFL accomplishments of former Heisman Trophy winners):
1.Barry Sanders
2.Roger Staubach
3.O.J. Simpson
4.Paul Hornung
5.Charles Woodson
6.Tony Dorsett
7.Tim Tebow
8.Earl Campbell
9.Marcus Allen
10.Cam Newton
As they say over at ESPN, "C'mon, man!"
The fact that we probably couldn't find a single NFL personnel evaluator that would take Tebow, the recently acquired Jets quarterback, over reigning offensive rookie of the year Newton is beside the point since neither one of them deserves to be on the list at this juncture.
But really, Tebow ahead of Campbell and Allen, both Hall of Famers? Not only is it a slap in the face to that duo -- one of the best bulldozing backs ever and a Super Bowl MVP, respectively -- but also to unlisted players such as Tim Brown, Eddie George, Jim Plunkett, Doak Walker (another Hall of Famer) and Herschel Walker.
We could also easily argue slotting Alan Ameche, Mike Garrett, Bo Jackson, Carson Palmer, George Rogers, Billy Sims, Vinny Testaverde and Ricky Williams ahead of Tebow.
And no, this isn't anti-Tebow sentiment run amok, just pure respect and acknowledgement for his relative accomplishments in two NFL seasons measured against men with far more impressive pro resumes.
And the show's rationale that Tebow's ability to translate his unorthodox college style to the pros? Lame -- very lame.
NFL Films doesn't disclose who compiles its lists for the Top 10 series.
"This is totally ratings-driven. I get it, I understand what you're doing," Sports Illustrated's Don Banks sagely says in the piece. "You gotta get a little Tebow time on your Top 10."
Amen, Don.
C'mon, Mr. Sabol -- do the right and issue a Top 10 retraction to ensure justice is served in your company's role as NFL historians and keepers of the league flame ... and we'll argue the relative rankings of Woodson and Staubach some other time.

its obvious what is going on here. This is the type of thing that ends up on tv in the new espn generationProducers Respond to Tim Tebow Top 10 Outrageby TCIPF Staff
Below is a response from the producers of NFL Network’s “Top 10 Heisman Winners in the NFL” about the outrage of Tim Tebow’s placement on the list.
This morning, the blogosphere is on fire with outrage that Tim Tebow’s outranked two Hall of Famers on our list of Top 10 Heisman Trophy Winners in the NFL. C’mon guys, give Tebow a break. The Heisman Trophy isn’t always about who’s the best player. Just ask Larry Fitzgerald and Eli Manning about losing out to Jason White.
This isn’t a personnel department’s draft evalution, it’s a ranking of stars. That’s what your ideal Heisman winner is – a star.
The list’s criteria was simple:
■Who had the best NFL career?
■Who had signature plays and great moments?
■Who had box-office appeal? Who sells tickets? Who sells jerseys?
■Who has cultural resonance? Who passes the Mom test?
Tim Tebow hasn’t had the playing career that Earl Campbell or Marcus Allen but Heismans are about more than yards gained or touchdowns scored. And in terms of cultural resonance, Tebow’s off the charts.
See what all the debate’s about with an encore presentation of Top 10 Heisman Winners in the NFL today at 3 p.m. eastern, noon pacific and next Thursday, May 3rd at 8 p.m. eastern, 5 p.m. pacific only on NFL Network.

really? REALLY? -
reggie bush doesn't have a heisman
-
If tim tebow is better than Marcus Allen and Earl Campbell then NFL Network will lose all its credibility.
-
Cam Newton has won rookie of the year and made Steve Smith relevant again.
-
reggie bush doesn't have a heisman
technicality. you know full well what im talkin about tho
-
Can someone tell me what in the wide world of ? does Cultural Relevance and the Mom's test have to do with throwing a football?? FOH with this ? list.

Now I wish nothing but awful things for Tebow career. But damn he can't get no worst then what he already is.
