Amateur video shot in Montreal's Le Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood showed a cab driver ramming a driver with car during an apparent altercation.

Montreal police said they've nabbed a cabbie who was videotaped crushing a 23-year-old man with his car during a violent altercation early Sunday and then speeding off.

Guercy Edmond, 47, was charged Monday with aggravated assault causing ? harm and leaving the scene of an accident where someone was injured, the Montreal Gazette reported. He is expected to appear in court on a bond hearing Wednesday.

The victim, Benoit Kapelli, was said to be in stable condition at a local hospital with head and other unspecified injuries, according to the Gazette.

The first video, which a local artist said he shot from his apartment window at around 4 a.m., shows a small mob, including Kapelli, kicking the cab and pounding on its windows following what police said was an argument with the driver at an intersection in the Le Plateau-Mont-Royal neighborhood.

At one point in the video, the cab swings into a U-turn, narrowly missing Kapelli and one other person, while another man leaps onto the back and stomps on the roof.

Kapelli then kicks the car once more before the driver guns it, pinning the burly, bald attacker beneath the front left wheel, and speeds off.

It is unclear who or what caused the confrontation.

The second video, shot from street level, shows Kapelli wide-eyed and wheezing on the ground, bleeding from a large ? on his chin.

Police were considering filing charges against him as well, the Toronto Star reported.

Edmond's lawyer, Yves Vaillancourt, said the cabbie feared for his life during the altercation and drove away in self-defense.

"For him, he was under attack," Vaillancourt told the Gazette. "He is nervous. He didn't understand why he [was arrested]. He feels like he was a victim, too."

Edmond doesn't have a criminal record.

His wife told the Gazette her husband, a father of two teens, has been ripped off and robbed by passengers before.
