Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada gave today a specific condition on when we'll get a remake of Final Fantasy VII.

During the Q&A session of the company's annual shareholder's briefing (transcribed here), Wada was asked the expected question about the much wanted remake. His response was something to the effect of, we'll make a Final Fantasy VII remake once we've made a Final Fantasy game that exceeds the quality of FFVII.

If you get the feeling that this statement belittles Square Enix's current development prowess, you're pretty much spot on. Wada admitted that at present, the company is not making Final Fantasy games that exceed the quality of FFVII. If they were to release a 7 remake right now, the FF franchise would be done with, he said.

While the staff would happily make an FFVII remake, this is something that if they decided to do, they'd have to give it their full effort.

Apparently Toriyama, and some other dudes at SE want to do it, but Wada says no.

Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2 director Motomu Toriyama gave a presentation at the Game Developers Conference yesterday. No, not that Game Developers Conference!

Toriyama spoke about Final Fantasy XIII and its sequel at the Game Developers Conference in Taipei, which was held on the 26th and 27th. Famitsu.com filed a full report, packed with pics of the presentation and the many slides showing top secret XIII-2 design docs.

When browsing the Famitsu.com pics, you'll want to look for one that says "Final Fantasy XIII Season 2." This was apparently what the game was referred to during the concept phases.

Toriyama also spoke about the use of download content in FFXIII-2. This is the first time Square Enix has placed such effort into download content for a numbered FF game. The plan to offer DLC for the game was in place at the start of development, revealed Toriyama. During the end of the main XIII-2's development, the staff started work on DLC in parallel. Toriyama believes that DLC will be a required feature for future games.

Toriyama's presentation ended not with Final Fantasy XIII or XIII-2, but with Final Fantasy VII. During a Q&A session, an attendee asked when a Final Fantasy VII remake will be released. Toriyama replied by mentioning the recent quote from Square Enix CEO Yoichi Wada saying that Square Enix won't make an FFVII remake until they've made a game that surpasses FFVII. He joked, "As a creator, there's a bit in there that I can't agree with."

FFVII is not the best Final Fantasy. One of the best, but not the best.

To SE the "best" FF is the one that sold the most.

Then FFXI will never get a remake... Since it sold the most and Square don't like money...

I personally don't even count the mmorgg FF's (FF XI, and FF XIV) as actual Final fantasies. Probably just gave them the 11, and 14 names for sales.

I liked FF8 but i still think 7 was better. it was the first game i actually read all the way thru and spent countless hours on. i probably just like 7 more for the impact it had on me for gaming lol. FF7 FF8 then FF10 were my faves.

    FFVIII was my first love...
VII is a close second and I respect it for what it did for gaming and the playstation era...

I like Casino over Goodfellas for the same reasons... *shrugs*

I hear that. I played Super Mario RPG and Chrono Trigger back in the day, but the first rpg I owned was FFVIII and I am playing through it now and about to beat it after I get through with some of these seals and Ultimecia.
Seifer taking out Odin was bananas...

Nothing wrong with that, Casino is a better movie than Goodfellas even though both are undeniable classics. Just like FFVIII or FFIX >>> FFVII. At least speaking on the PS1 days. I believe FFX >>> FFVII as well, even XII is arguable over VII.

Anybody try messing with those Final Fantasy 7 mods on the PC? It makes the graphics look much better. Some of the environment still look dated but more smoothed. The characters look less blocky.

Some of y'all need to stop with FF8 surpassed FF7. How beside the graphics, OST (possibly) and FMV's? FF8 is one of the worst FF's.

irony is that you have the same name as its main protagonist lol

Never mind the fact whether ff 13-2 is a good game or not, but the best villain in FF history is Caius.
