Dude gets it in. I've seen him play sleaze bags, intellectuals, quirky sidekicks, gangsters, and president, and he kills everything i've seen him. A true actor for real.

Denzel, Morgan Freeman, Will Smith, Jack Nicholson, Robert Downey Jr., Russell Crowe, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Samuel L Jackson, Anthony Hopkins, Cuba Gooding Jr, Edward Norton, David Fassbender(once his potential is finally realized), Heath Ledger(RIP)... ok I'm going to stop. I like Paul Giamatti, but your setting yourself up for failure here bro.

He is a very good actor, and plays different roles as well. I suppose your favourite actor is subjective. If you had put someone like Al Pacino or Denzel Washington, people will always still choose who they think is better. Me personally. I think:

    (In no particular order)

    Christian Bale
    Leonardo Di Caprio
    Denzel Washington
    Sam Rockwell
    Bryan Cranston
    Ryan Gosling
    Will Smith
    Johnny Depp
    Robert Downey Jr
    Stanley Tucci

Paul Giamatti is that dude, very underrated. With that said I wouldn't name 10 better than him, but just say he is one of the elite actors in the industry now. IMO

When i started the thread i guess i shouldve indicated the category of contemporary. Its no question about some of the greats. But i wasnt referring to cats over fifty. Cats like brando, deniro, pacino, freeman ,nicholson, and sir anthony hopkins, thats another generation. Im referring to cats in Denzel generation. Some of the posters have some great lists, and some of them even jogged my memory. Like I forgot about cranston. Dude is great, bale, meh, ribisi, great, neeson, meh. But someone had burt reynolds, kevin costner, and kurt russell. Cmon son. Now that i've been enlightened, he still makes my top ten right now.

    Without naming the usuals:

    Phillip Seymour Hoffman
    Benicio Del Toro
    Michael Shannon
    Jackie Earle Haley
    Gary Oldman
    Forest Whitaker
    Edward Norton
    Tom Wilkinson
    Stanley Tucci
    Kevin Spacey

    and Frances McDormand

Paul Giamatti is a very fine actor. But I wouldn't put him in a "Top __" list just yet.

Co-sign Bryan Cranston x 1000. I watch Breaking Bad but I just saw him on old episodes of King of Queens. The two roles are night and day and he does both effortlessly. The guy is amazing. It's too bad he's not doing feature films because he is an Oscar-caliber actor. Definitely top 20.

Yeah I'm a ridiculous fan of Bryan Cranston - epic actor on Breaking Bad. I remember him from Malcolm in the Middle as the dad. But he ha been in Seinfeld and the King of Queens, and mostly did comedic roles. However he is doing some movies now because of his Breaking Bad fame. He was in the film Drive with Ryan Gosling, Contagion, Red Tails and The Lincoln Lawyer. As well as being included in upcoming film Total Recall with Colin Farrell

Haven't seen Drive or Lincoln Lawyer. Totally forgot he was in Contagion and Red Tails. The guy deserves nothing less than a leading role.

And on another topic, Leo was GOAT in Basketball Diaries. He cemented it for me with that film.

So you have to be in films to be an elite actor - that means Sarah Jessica Parker should be owed her Oscar now - right?

Fortyacres&amule knows what i'm talking bout. I watched the John Adams joint yesterday and I was already a fan of his. Thats what prompted me to create this thread.I recently seen the flick where he was a Lawyer/ high school wrestling coach which took him up a notch, then the John Adams portrayal took it over the top. I'm talking bout dude went in. Had me choked up fo real in a scene where his wife of 54 yrs died. Aint too many people messing with dude. Not to mention the fact that dude is getting these roles based on his looks like s lot of actors on some peoples lists.

WTF? How do you make this leap??

Of course elite actors have to be doing feature films....the best of the best are in feature films. Being a great TV actor doesnt equate to being a GREAT film actor.

Gonna stream this tonight. Been meaning to watch it since it came out.

@ rage: I disagree. A great actor is a great actor, no matter the medium...tv, film, stage..whatever. There might be different logistics involved but that doesn't change the actors abilities.
