Dr.Dre is a hip hop icon/entrepreneur, I understand that. I'm also a fan and I got his CDs and cassettes.
However, I'm talking strictly music production wise, Erick Sermon (1/2 of the legendary group, EPMD) is marginally is better than Dr. Dre.
Here is some reasons why Erick Sermon should be in considered.
1. Erick Sermon has played a instrument (MPC, Keyboard, Logic, and etc.) in all his production. He may not have played every single instrument on a song but he doesn't have somebody else make the beat so he mix it and slap his name on the entire production credit.
2. Erick Sermon came out in 1987-88 with EPMD, which is also around the time that Dr.Dre and NWA came out.
Til this day, people say Erick was using a "west coast" sound or samples in his production. "You Gots to Chill" could probably be the earliest usage of a Roger Troutman track that has been used millions of times in West Coast Rap during the early 90's. So in other words, Erick was a bit ahead of Dre on finding funk samples.
3. Dr.Dre is known for quality in music production. Erick Sermon should be in the same class when it comes to quality. He may have boring beats (all producers have them) but you can never call it wack or even his discography of production wack. Erick Sermon got tons of beats that make you nod your head, make you wanna freestyle, or even dance to. ? Drake & 40, Eminem, and P.Diddy. Erick managed to ressurect Marvin Gaye on a record and make the song pop on the billboards.
I may be bias by saying that Dr.Dre has more classic instrumentation because its more known but Erick Sermon is the Clyde Drexler of Hip Hop Music Production.
Here's some proof of his work.

To me, Strictly Business and Unfinished Business are the equivalent of Chronic and 2001. E Dubb is a GOAT.
Plus, Erick on the mic>>>>>any producer not named Kanye. -

Erick can't see Quik on a mic but....
I noticed the ghost-producing drop you made on Dre....lol, its ironic because I was coming into this thread to say "inb4 ghost producing rumors" but its in the opening statement.
I'm not a huge fan of EPMD but I appreciate them.
I like Dre during the 80s & 90s. The stuff he did on Ruthless & Death Row >> -
u might be right..

I'm not sure about overall. But I will certainly say that E was ahead of all Producers when it came to funk samples. And I forget which video it was but EPMD and NWA were hanging out back in the 80's. Which leads me to believe E had some influence on Dre.

I don't understand why people say that Dre 'steals beats'. Look at the liner notes, everyone he works with is credited properly from co-producing to mixing.

Say what you want about E Dubb, him being a grimy ass dude by setting up his PNC to get robbed or him hopping out windows and ? , at least he never used ghost producers as a last ditch effort....
Erick Sermon >>> ? Dre
Hittin' Switches >>> most Dre songs -
this track bumps in the whip... and Slick Rick lightweight killd it....

Man ....yall ? just don't stop with this silly ? ... see this is the type of ? dumb ? will read and start believing.
Erick is not ? with Dr Dre as a producer... and I grew up on EPMD... when Dre and NWA came out... their production was on a whole different level. -

^^^ a beat that both Erick Sermon and Dr. Dre collaborated on. It's mainly Erick Sermon though as the credits read that Dre did additional production. -
Lol I've been on this for years. I've said many times on this forum that E Dubb >>>> Dre, and that E Dubb was on the Funk samples before Dre. Redman's "Whut Thee Album" debuted before "The Chronic" & "? ". Cats give Erick Sermon no credit yo.

pharrell (the neptunes) >>>>>>>> eric sermon -
only in the I.C. Reason and only in this lil thread

I respectfully disagree, and I think Pharell would too. -
I always say that EPMD invited funk long before Dre. Their sound wasn't as raw and grimey, but Dre was havily inluenced by E-Dub. I don't know if he's better, but dude's production is very underrated ,which is evident on examples posted above.
-
neither are better or worse..... their different and im grateful for em both
-
E's funk based production was more grimier, aka straight from the sewer, while dre''s production is sonically cleaner and crisper. But I ride with em both. Didnt know e doubles work was that exstensive. E chopped up samples and dre had live musicians interpolate ? . Thats the difference whose best? Aint no best they both nice, dre is just more popular.
