I had it in my head that marriage was not designed for men to benefit at all and that it cut freedom and that getting married was the equivalent to sticking your head into a noose.

Recently i've adapted an ideology in which I feel as though I am not obligated to most people - which is true because we have no agreement and the law does not say I need to help you - thus I am justified in abstaining and refusing to do nice / thoughtful things for people. It is in that thinking that I realized: Unless you have some sort of contract (i.e. marriage) a person you are in a "relationship" with does not owe you a damn thing and you are not entitled to their gratitude, loyalty, help, attention and whatever else you may desire. While people try to say marriage is about love, i do not see it as that. It is about making sure you are getting what you desire through contract.

In this understanding, I can see now why people would want to get married.
