The dramatic surveillance image shows the moment before Lamin Sillah was killed. The gunman is at large.

A hardworking accounting student working the night shift at a Bronx gas station to send money back to his family in Africa was shot dead at point blank range in a robbery Tuesday night.

Police are looking for the shooter of Lamin Sillah, 28, a recent immigrant from Gambia who was fatally shot in the torso during a confrontation with the gunman.

According to police, the thief and a lookout rolled up on bikes to RC Petroleum at E. 182nd St. and Southern Blvd. at 9:40 p.m. and promptly robbed an outside attendant of $30.

That victim wasn’t harmed, police said.

A video released by police next shows the robber, in blue jeans and a blue NY Giants sweatshirt with the hood up, enter the station booth and push the muzzle of a large black handgun toward Sillah’s face.
“There's a struggle,” said NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly. “He shoots him. (Sillah) falls down. He shoots him again. He twice goes through his pockets, drags the body out of the office."

Police have released this sketch of a suspect in the shooting death of Lamin Sillah. The suspect is described as being 20-25 years old with a stocky build. He was last seen wearing a blue "New York Giants" sweatshirt.

It’s unclear how much money was taken from Sillah, who was just 20 minutes away from the end of his shift, his uncle Alhagie Ebou Cham said.

Sillah was sending money home to a new wife in Gambia. He immigrated in November 2011 to study business management at the New York Institute of English and Business in midtown Manhattan.
“He was a hardworking boy who loved his education,” Cham said. “He wanted to be the very best accountant.”

Sillah lived with Cham, 54, and a cousin on Washington Ave. in the Bronx. He planned to return to Gambia after school. Cham said he was arranging to return Sillah’s body to Gambia for burial there.

Sillah had only worked at the gas station near the southern entrance to the Bronx Zoo for about 10 days, his uncle said.

The son of a gas station coworker, who was off-duty at the time of the shooting, said Sillah was nice to him one day when he was visiting his dad there.
"He came over asking who am I, checking on my father," said the son, Jeff Diaz. "Then he said, 'Nice to know you.' He seemed a very nice gentleman."

Police said the suspect is a black male, aged 20 to 25, with a stocky build. His accomplice is a thin black man, last seen in a white t-shirt. Anyone with information about the robbery is urged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. Tips can also be shared at Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound or by texting 274637 (CRIMES), then entering TIP577. All calls are confidential.
