What kinda tablet should I shoot for? my brother in law have the kindle fire, is that a good one?

The kindle tablets are pretty good specwise, but I think they have a stripped down version of Android on them. Basically the Kindle and Nook tablets are glorified readers. I thing the Nexus 7 and 10 are probably the best buys about now, but I'm more of a phone person than a tablet person.

Just bought a Nexus 7 three days ago. Good price and can do everything the Fire can do and much more for about $ 25 more. You can also download the Amazon Kindle App on it and buy books from Amazon. -

avoid cheap Chinese tablets based on MIPS processors. Your favorite app probably hasn't been compiled for MIPS, meaning that it simply won't work on them. The vast majority of Android devices run ARM processors, not MIPS. -
i'm sorry but android is trash it just does not work as smooth as apple
