A family died trying to save their dog from the powerful waves in northern California, police said on Monday. A husband and wife were killed and their 16-year-old son is still missing after they all tried to rescue their dog. The dog eventually made it out of the water on its own in perfect health.

10-foot waves pulled the dog into the ocean, authorities said. Dana Jones, a state Parks and Recreation district superintendent, told the Associated Press that the 16-year-old went to after the dog, which caused his father to go after him. When the boy wasn't able to escape the waves, the boy's mother went in as well.

"Both were dragged into the ocean," Jones said.

The couple's daughter called the police, who had to run a half-mile to the beach because the car was not able to handle the rough terrain. Once the police officer arrived, he was not able to reach the couple because of the high waves.

Rescuers eventually retrieved the mother's body, and the father's washed up later. Coast Guard helicopters searched for the boy, but had to abandon the search due to thick fog.
