Did Gunplay escape a life sentence? Potentially.

In October, the rapper was put on house arrest while he faced charges of armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and aggravated assault from an incident last April which found him pulling a gun on his accountant. But he was granted release on Jan. 17 and his trial was set to begin today (Feb. 25).

"Not guilty," he told Rolling Stone last month. "We're just waiting for the last trial date so we can get [the case] kicked out."

And that may be exactly what happened.

"I jus gave da State of Florida back a life sentence!!" the Miami-bred MC tweeted earlier this morning. "Case dismissed!!

The news isn't official just yet, but we'll take him at his word for now. Because rappers are known for being very honest about stuff.

More info:

According to TMZ, the Def Jam signee has been exonerated despite the fact that there is surveillance video that shows him robbing his accountant. The case was dismissed because the victim refused to cooperate, as authorities tried to subpoena him but were unable to track him down.

"Video alone is not enough to convict an individual of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt," explained the Miami-Dade State Attorney's office. "Although the armed robbery is captured on the victim's surveillance system, the victim, Turron Woodside, is uncooperative of the prosecution of this defendant Richard Morales [Gunplay]."

Gunplay spoke on the outcome of the case, stating that he plans to pick up where he left off. "Today I am grateful and blessed that the case was dismissed," he said. "I plan on picking up where I left off with my music and making hits with my upcoming debut album ... The first thing I am going to do today is smoke a joint, relax, play video games, and just be with my loved ones."

Gunplay, who was charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault in the incident, turned himself over to authorities last October. He was placed under house arrest and could have faced life in prison if convicted on both counts.

He is currently gearing up for the release of his Def Jam debut Medellin, which will feature guest appearances from Pharrell Williams and Big Sean. He previously told HipHopDX he will appear on Lil Wayne's I Am Not a Human Being II.
