We finally have an update and a first look!

In a miniature Nintendo Direct Broadcast, the Big N confirmed that FlipNote Studio 3D still exists, and it's heading to Japan this Summer. The company first announced the follow-up to their popular DSiWare application almost two years ago, but has been silent about details and a release date ever since that initial mention.

Just like its predecessor, FlipNote Studio 3D will be available free of charge. Updated from the original version, it will allow users to draw on three layers and make use of six colors to bring their 3D FlipNotes to life. Once you're done creating, you can then export your file as an animated GIF or AVI movie file. This is to make it easier to share your FlipNotes on social and video sharing websites.

FlipNote 3D will allow players to share their animations with people on their 3DS Friend List free of charge thanks to the FlipNote Gallery Friends feature. You can also upload your creations to Flipnote Gallery World, a global community website which will be offered for a small monthly subscription fee. This additional service will be offered free for a 30-day trial period. There will also be certain occasions when users who aren't subscribed will be able to use the service at no charge, and Nintendo may also waive the fee if your animations are popular enough.

No word yet on when FlipNote Studio 3D will come out in North America or Europe. More information on new features and the various communities will be made available soon, so stay tuned to IGN for the latest on all things 3DS.
