Warner Bros. Games Montreal has taken the mantle of the bat from Rocksteady Studios this time around for Batman: Arkham Origins. WB Montreal has full access to Rocksteady's custom modified Unreal engine to capture the look and feel of the Arkhamverse. As the title suggests, the game takes place years before both of the previous Arkham titles when a young, unrefined Batman encounters many supervillains for the first time. On our full cover image below, fans will recognize the assassin Deathstroke, who appears for the very first time in a core Arkham game.

Heading up the vision for Arkham Origins is creative director Eric Holmes, known for being the lead designer of open world action hits The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype. A self-professed lover of comics, Holmes even wrote the miniseries Transformers: Megatron Origin for IDW.

Gamers won't have to wait long to experience Batman's lastest adventure. Batman: Arkham Origins releases October 25, 2013 on Wii U, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

But that's not all. We also have a feature on the first handheld Arkham game, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Releasing on 3DS and Vita the same day as the home console version, Blackgate is a completely separate experience that takes place after the events of Arkham Origins. Armature Studio is developing the 2.5-D Metroid-style exploration action game. Industry followers will recognize Armature Studio as the company founded by several of the leads from the Metroid Prime trilogy.

Watch our coverage trailer below to get a taste of all the Batman content headed your way over the next several weeks.

Yea, they gotta come hard with this one. I kind of liked Arkham Asylum more than Arkham City, just a little...cause both were dope games. Arkham Asylum gets the edge though because collecting ? in that games was way better. I 100%'d the first, didn't even come close with the second. It was just a chore. So, they gotta come up with more way to extend the experience other than Riddler trophies and challenge rooms. Co-op would be a good look...

I'm guessing the Joker isn't going to be in it since Mark Hamill said it was too much strain on his voice.
that ? is the Joker though. nobody comes close to voicing him right.
I agree with finding the trophies was a chore. I wasn't close to finding them all in AC

Yea, but this hopefully free's up Rocksteady to work on that rumored Justice League game for the NeXtBox and PS4.

    Assassinating Batman in Arkham Origins
It's not Year One, but it's close.
by Richard George APRIL 9, 2013

Whether in movies, television, comics or video games, when Batman needs a change of pace, creative teams tend to lean towards the iconic hero's formative years. That's precisely the case with Batman: Arkham Origins, just announced this morning for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U and PC. Since the game's reveal, Game Informer's cover story has gone live, providing us with some critical new details in the next Batman adventure, due out October 25.

As previously noted, the Dark Knight will face eight assassins, including fan favorite Deathstroke, who have journeyed to Arkham City to ? him. We now know that Black Mask is responsible for putting a bounty on Batman's head, though exactly why will be a key mystery in the game's story. Also playing into the plot - Gotham City's acclimation to its rookie protector. Players will not only see a much more skeptical and potentially hostile Gotham City Police Department (aka the 'GCPD', which happens to feature a young Captain Jim Gordon), but younger and healthier versions of big bad guys like the Penguin - who apparently didn't always have the tail end of a glass bottle shoved in one eye.

Arkham Origins will feature similar gameplay to its predecessors, as new developer WB Montreal is very much intent on picking up where Rocksteady left off. That means perch-to-perch movement, gliding kicks and 'free-form combat' are all back. While the Montreal studio was free to develop its plot and new feature (like a 'Remote Claw', which allows you to target and pull two objects together), it leaned on Rocksteady for advice on technical and mechanical elements of the game.

Another new feature - quick travel via the airborne Batwing. Though not a controllable vehicle, Arkham Origins will finally eliminate one of the more tedious elements from Asylum and City, allowing Batman to move from point to point much faster than before - - provided he dismantles towers that jam his ability to call in his plane. (Unlike, say, Far Cry 3, these tower sequences will require a wide variety of skills and powers, including some that will have to be unlocked first.) It's a good thing Montreal is providing the Dark Knight with a quick method of transport - WB Montreal contends that Origins is nearly twice the size of Arkham City, adding an entirely new island, called 'New Gotham', to build upon the more familiar 'Old Gotham', which will still feature familiar locations like Amusement Mile and The Bowery.

The Montreal team intends to maintain the same world "density" despite doubling its size, adding ideas like 'Crime in Progress' (assist the GCPD and build your reputation) and 'Most Wanted' (track down non-assassin villains). In many cases these side quests will provide the upgrades to Batman's arsenal. These upgrades, combined with the game's existing XP system, funnel into the larger concept of the 'Dark Knight' system, which is basically the team's way of progressively adding more complexity and difficulty to Origins.

Origins will also put more emphasis on Batman's detective skills. Cases large and small will serve as a slower change of pace from action, allowing players to investigate crime scenes, gather evidence, analyze data and even return to those scenes with more information later in the game. Over time, as each case is solved, a full video narrative of the case will unlock, piecing together the crime.

Batman: Arkham Origins - Entering Blackgate
Metroid Prime veterans are hard at work in Gotham.
by Richard George APRIL 9, 2013

You'd be forgiven for thinking the epic scope and ambition of the Arkham series couldn't (easily) make its way to the likes of the PlayStation Vita and Nintendo 3DS. Yet developer Armature has apparently found a way. Due alongside its console-counterpart, 'Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate' adapts the proven Rocksteady formula into a portable setting while seemingly losing none of its core traits.

According to the latest issue of Game Informer, Blackgate looks to adapt the concepts of Arkham Asylum and Arkham City into a 2.5D action game that, like its predecessors, channels the spirit of Metroid. Armature's team, which is lead by several former Retro Studios employees, plans to make this adventure non-linear, with equipment and gear that can be discovered within the dark walls of Blackgate. Those accessories can then, of course, be used to access new areas of the Blackgate prison, allowing the Dark Knight to continue his quest.

The team is removing the notion of XP and 'leveling up' to foster a sense of exploration and acquisition versus simply becoming more powerful through improved stats. Bosses, which can be encountered and battled in any order, each have a significant weakness to a specific weapon type, further encouraging players to look in every corner of the prison. To encourage a seamless sense of progression, saving the game will be possible at any point versus more typical Metroid-style "save rooms."

Perspective aside, Armature is looking to bring every element of the Arkham games into this portable adventure. Stealth gameplay, vantage points, free-flow combat, countering systems and the detective mode are all back. Losing a controllable camera in a 3D environment does bring some sensory deprivation, so to keep players informed of enemy behavior and reactions, there are plans to add more feedback to alert players to the world around them.

Blackgate certainly sounds promising based on early information. No doubt we'll see more on the game in the near future - E3 2013 is just two months away.

Rocksteady Endorses Batman: Arkham Origins Team
"Rocksteady is excited to see WB Games Montreal developing the prequel."

Rocksteady Studios has voiced its support for Warner Bros. Games Montreal, the studio tasked with creating the next game in the Arkham franchise.

When Batman: Arkham Origins was announced yesterday, one of the things that perturbed many gamers was the fact that Rocksteady Studios, the team responsible for previous games Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, wouldn't be returning to the project.

Sefton Hill, director of the first two games, has told Game Informer (via CVG) that he's confident passing the torch was the right move, and fans won't be disappointed.

"Rocksteady is excited to see WB Games Montreal developing the prequel to the Batman Arkham franchise," he said. "We are confident this talented team will craft a fantastic experience, bringing the origins of the Arkhamverse to life."

The man who's stepped into Hill's shoes for Origins, Eric Holmes, also added that a game set earlier in Batman's crimefighting escapades allows the studio greater freedom to revitalise familiar characters and gameplay tropes.

"It gives us the opportunity to refresh things a bit. Refresh characters, refresh ideas, refresh the dynamic between Batman and other characters, and refresh the world, too," he said. "Batman hasn't become the character that we know and are very familiar with."

It was announced yesterday that Batman: Arkham Origins is being developed for Xbox 360, PS3, PC and Wii U with a targeted release date of October 25. On the same day a companion game, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate, will be released on 3DS and Vita.

If you want to know more about the latest Batman game, be sure to check out our analysis of the Game Informer article in which fast travel, plot details, gameplay details and much more have been revealed.

If the fighting engine is the same IMO it should be straight...Im curious though no Oracle perhaps it will be Alfred or maybe a Batgirl appearnce and Nightwing wouldnt be in this game if its based on early Batman cause he would still be the first Robin.

Batman: Arkham Origins was revealed on the cover of GameInformer yesterday, but now the magazine is out and ripe for the press to shift into detective mode. Though some things are rather obvious on the surface.

Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate – first details and screenshots
April 9th, 2013 Posted in 3DS, News, Screenshots, Vita
    Posted By: Valay

Batman: Arkham Origins isn’t the only new Batman game in development. Armature Studio is also working on Origins Blackgate, a new entry in the series for the 3DS and PlayStation Vita.

Game Informer has first information about Blackgate in this month’s issue. You can find images and details summarized below along with screenshots. There’s even more in Game Informer, so we highly advise that you take a look at this the publication’s May issue.

    batman_blackgate-1.jpg
    batman_blackgate-3.jpg
    batman_blackgate-4.jpg

    - Warner Bros. wanted to have a 2.5D-style Arkham game in the style of Metroidvania
    - The company chose Armature because the studio was familiar with that style of game
    - Takes place after the end of Origins
    - Set on the isolated island at the Blackgate Penitentiary
    - Prison uprising has occurred
    - Intro level in Gotham
    - Batman goes to Blackgate in order to put a stop to the riot
    - 2D animatics with full voices tell the story
    - Batman moves through a side-scrolling game world
    - He’ll pick up near gear and take on enemies along the way
    - Interconnected passages and prison secrets
    - Not focused on leveling up abilities like the console games
    - Instead, it stays true to the subgenre’s formula
    - All of Batman’s improvements came through gear pick-ups and upgrades
    - Team wanted to give players more of a sense of collection
    - Mostly set along a 2D plane
    - Takes full advantage of the visual three-dimensionality of the environments
    - Explore, fight, and interact with the foreground abnd background
    - Can grapple up to gargoyles on a background balcony while a crowd of armed inmates pass by
    - Enemies will go after Batman from all angles
    - Go to the foreground or background to tackle a designed foe
    - Combat similar to the console Batman games
    - Button taps to attack, counter, and use gear are in place
    - Freeflow combat system
    - Built from the ground up
    - Batarang: stun enemies or hit distant objects
    - Line launcher: cross wide gaps
    - Explosive gel variation: shoot from a launcher onto spots around the screen
    - This lets you get involved with entertaining takedowns such as dropping a chandelier on enemies from above
    - More gadgets will also be in the game
    - Has a version of the predator mode
    - Game has a few more layers of feedback
    - Ex: can see the sightlines of enemies
    - This lets you know if enemies can see you or not
    - Same kind of vantage points, floor grates, silent takedowns, glide kicks, weapon use, and breakable walls as in the console games
    - Game is split into various sections
    - Each can be accessed once you figure out a way inside
    - No save rooms
    - Modern checkpoint system
    - Can manually save whenever you desire
    - Can defeat the bosses in any ordder if you find out where you want to go
    - “We don’t want you to break the game, but if you can exploit it in a certain way that we haven’t thought of, that’s awesome. So it’s conceivable the players will have abilities that don’t necessarily jibe that great with the boss. We’ve taken some cues from other games where if you have a particular item against a boss, you’ll just rip them a new one, but we don’t tell you what that item is”
    - Will have detective mode
    - Tap a button and the screen fades into a digitized overlay with detailed info
    - Green enemies: enemies haven’t seen you
    - Red enemies: enemies are onto your location
    - Move a reticle around the screen to focus Batman’s attention
    - Can use this to uncover secrets
    - Uncover clues and analyze dangerous situations in detective mode

i 100 on both i liked how ac you could glide around...didn't think the map was all that big tho cuz there was allot of open space...didn't understand why they would make a prequel but I'm guessing when the next gen comes they'll put out the sequel with maybe a new engine etc...and the guy who voiced the joker on The Batman cartoon was pretty ill, the design was wack af but voice was pretty good
