IN CASE YOU MISSED IT! This past weekend, Will and Jaden Smith's "After Earth" premiered, and while moviegoers at the theater I attended clapped while the credits rolled, many critics and commenters alike have blasted the movie, saying that they essentially are disgusted by Will Smith's "nepotism" and "exercise in vanity" by headlining with his son.
In the below article, I argue that this sudden "disgust" is actually racist because many of the commenters, who have commented across news and blogs sites across the Internet, admit to refusing to see the movie.
But why all the drama?
I argue that both Hollywood and White America are accustomed to allowing ONE Black person to enjoy the limelight at the time. Will Smith is clearly one of those beneficiaries. But as soon as Blacks take control over their power and begin to OWN our success, we are shut down. Just think of all of the backlash Oprah received when she decided to ditch her talk show and think bigger with OWN. Quote:
"For the longest, Hollywood and White America has historically crowned one Black male the darling of the times. Whether it was Sidney Poitier or Bill Cosby or Denzel Washington, I know I’m not alone in noticing that there is usually one Black media darling allowed to exist at a time. Obviously, this list extends beyond acting. Just check for Oprah or Michael Jordon. All of these individuals appeared to be given access AT A TIME.
"But the idea that we can have SEVERAL or MANY Blacks of note dominating the media at the same time has always been a no-no.
More to the point, how DARE Will Smith think he can anoint his son prince without [Hollywood's or White America's] permission?"
Will you support "After Earth" and do you think some people's refusal to watch the movie is racist?
Support the movie.
It’s high time that we stop allowing others to determine when we can be allowed to break through the glass ceiling, and it’s high time that we know that just as Whites in this country have been able to secure futures for their offspring, we can too.
Sound off!

So a movie can't just be ? or what?
-
I seen the bootleg. It's an average ass movie. Nothing special. Will Smith is too full of himself.
-
Go look at the comments on the movie on this site. Most of them say the movie is mediocre at best. It being an example of nepotism isn't a racist statement, it's a fact.
-
The preview did look wack. I was thinking "What the ? is this ? ?", instead of "I want to watch this.".
Wouldn't be surprised the movie was ? . -

i think theyre saying because many of the critics hadnt actually seen the movie before they bombed on it tho
-
Is there an HD quality one of the movie or otherwise I will wait to the movie and this comes from people who's opinion are great.
-
Will check it out online..
however there were plenty of wack movies.. that got crazy viewership..... just saying it could be.. i mean i cant see how this ? is .. super wack unless its on some scifi channel ? .. if it provides the entertainment then it did its part.. this wasnt an "OSCAR" movie.. -
will smith is no longer attractive.
-
will smith sabotaged it when he hired m. night shamawhatever to direct
-
Gotdayum. Even the pic in the article makes it look wack.

The movie was average not great but good....
Having said that the amount of hate and visceral criticism it is receiving is highly unwarranted... I've seen a whole lot worse films this year alone and the fact that you can go in on a movie u have yet to see especially as a critic is ignorant....
And white America esp in Hollywood has been practicing nepotism for decades but now its disgusting?
*waits for fresh prince last pharaoh of Egypt film* -

I liked the movie. Idk wtf the masses talkin bout
Kid got on my gotdamn nerves not listening n ? tho -
Movie looks like ? .
I can't stand the 'my family is better than yours' vibe that I get from Smith. Not a big fan of his work. Extremely overrated by black folk.
Disagree with that 'one ? at a time' thing.
About the nepotism. It is what it is. Jaden wanted to act. His father is Will Smith. Don't see an issue.
-
so nepotism is a problem when black people do it.. shiiiiiiiiiit check ya locale...
-
Is Jaden Smith the one that sings the whip my hair back and fourth song?
-
Told people not to watch them shamalamalayka movies

How the hell do you get that vibe?
This is a classic, literal definition of hatin -
When its krakas its " following in their parents footsteps" but when its ? its nepotism
-
Racists hate seeing a black man leading anything..
It's 'vain'...but had it been a white man and his son it would've been a great 'bonding' experience for the two of them.
I was just telling the bf that it would be pretty awesome to have a piece of work with your father like that.
The movie does look kinda cheesy though..I think it's that wack accent Will tries to use.

People complain about nepotism when white people do it too, especially when the person benefitting from the nepotism doesn't seem to be worthy of what they are receiving.

I've heard it several times in the past few weeks.....give one example of critics going at a white person for it -
