J. Cole’s sophomore album Born Sinner was released just a week ago and already the North Carolina emcee has plans to re-release two of his mixtapes commercially. While speaking with Houston’s 97.9 The Box, Cole informed fans that he would soon make The Warm Up and Friday Night Lights available for purchase.
"The classics that I had, I didn’t get a chance to like, have those be commercially sold…that was the only part that was missing,” said the rapper, according to MTV News. “So that’s my goal. Now that this album is doing well, my next plan is to release those commercially."
The Dreamville emcee later revealed that more than anything his primary concern is giving both of the well-received mixtapes the recognition “they deserve.”
“I don’t care if they sell a thousand copies. It’s just to get them the proper [recognition] that they deserve,” Cole shared.
Released in 2009, The Warm Up serves as Cole’s second official mixtape and features “Lights Please,” a record that went on to garner the attention of Roc Nation founder Jay-Z. Friday Night Lights hit the mixtape market the following year and boasted appearances from Drake, Wale, and more.
Canadian crooner The Weeknd pulled a similar move last year when he released a mixtape trilogy in the form of an album and made the project available for purchase

-
wasnt impressed at all with those projects
-
I don't think it's bad from a marketing perspective. He's hot right now so I think a decent amount of people will go out there and buy that because A.) they never heard it or B.) want anything Cole releases

Lol so..they'll probably be remastered with bonus songs, and even if they aren't some ppl prefer CD's at the end of the day..
Krit did this ? with Krit Wuz Here & Returnof4eva like a yr ago and ? on here was sayin how smart & dope it was that he was doing that..but now Cole and anyone who buys it are idiots? I guess lol -
He's gonna have to take some songs off because they're beats from other songs, so hopefully he adds some dope bonus tracks. I've got my fingers crossed for a CDQ version of Temptation w/ Kendrick

somebody trying to get out of their contract?
-

Finally! Now we're talking. KRIT, Lupe etc. should do the same thing. These artists need to stop releasing their music for free and put their business hats on.
All he needs to do is switch up the beats a little bit and maybe add a few unreleased tracks and he's good. -
the best songs on FNL were songs he can't even put out wtf.

WTF? Is he dumb?
nah i think hes smart. makin money w/ zero effort is smart af
the fans are the ones that are dumb.
