Don't miss out.

Amazon US has become the latest retailer to sell out of next-gen consoles, after announcing it will no longer offer launch day editions of either the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

In a post on Facebook, the company explained that Standard Editions will still be offered, but these are unlikely to arrive on release day. It's unclear if more consoles will be allocated to the retailer as a result.

"After a crazy and exciting month, we’ve sold through our initial allocations of PS4 and Xbox One," the post reads. "Thank you to all who have ordered and shared your opinions. We have the Standard Editions for both consoles still available, but we can’t guarantee these at release. Please check back here as we’ll update you first if we receive further release day allocations."

It's hardly surprising; last month Amazon reported that the next-gen consoles had shattered its pre-order records, with as many as 2,500 next-gen console purchases per minute funnelling through the online retailer.

It's just the latest retailer to run out of initial stock for the consoles. Earlier this week we heard that GameStop was halting PS4 pre-orders, which was in turn followed by Best Buy declaring it was doing the same for the Xbox One.

Time is most certainly running out if you've yet to guarantee yourself a next-gen console at launch. Let us know if you've pre-ordered yet or not in the comments.

Xbox One Pre-Orders Sold Out at Best Buy
Online orders can no longer be placed for Microsoft’s new console.

Best Buy has exhausted its stock of Xbox One pre-orders and is no longer accepting online purchases. Best Buy’s product page for Xbox One notes that the console is “Sold Out Online” and currently does not allow customers to complete a purchase for the system.

For now, Xbox One is still available for pre-order on Amazon as well as Wal-Mart, Target and GameStop.

This follows news yesterday that GameStop sold out of PlayStation 4 pre-orders, though other retailers (including Best Buy) are currently still allowing PS4 orders to be placed. We’ve reached out to Microsoft and Best Buy to find out if stock will be replenished and will update this story with any comment we receive.

GameStop Sells Out of PlayStation 4 Pre-Orders
    Something about an early bird...

GameStop has closed US pre-orders for the PlayStation 4 after it "sold out" its allocation of launch units.

The retailer's website explains that the console is "currently sold out", though there's no word on whether this is a permanent state of affairs or if the company is trying to increase its stock before reopening pre-orders.

A statement provided to GameInformer reads, "Due to high demand for the system, GameStop is not currently taking additional store reservations for the PlayStation 4."

IGN has reached out to GameStop for clarification about whether we can realistically expect pre-orders to reopen at some stage in the future or not.

Back in March, GameStop's president expressed his belief that demand for Sony's new console would far outstrip supply in the launch window; this sentiment was later echoed by Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Andrew House amid the company raising its sales projections for the device.

Judging by this latest development, it seems this could well be the case.
