Just for the record, you can buy the publishing rights to a song, any song. All you have to do is find whoever owns the rights and make a bid. If a record label is struggling financially they might be willing to make a deal with you.
For example, Bad Boy owns Notorious Big's catalog. But if they're struggling for whatever reason and not making their quarterly projections it could be lucrative to put one or two songs on the auction block (but not all of his material)
I knew a guy that owned the rights to Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA". He went up to Bruce Springsteen at a party and said something to the effect of, "I get paid everytime you perform that song". So Bruce Springsteen stopped performing "Born in the USA" until the guy I knew sold it. -
