Microsoft’s Illumiroom Too Expensive To Release

“For an average customer it’s, like, thousands of dollars.”
Microsoft says Illumiroom is unlikely to be released, as it would be too expensive for consumers.
Speaking to AusGamers, Xbox One head of product planning Albert Penello explained that Microsoft likes the tech, but the cost would be prohibitive.
“I wouldn’t expect you’ll see that,” Penello said when asked if we’re likely to see Illumiroom greenlit for release. “It’s very, very cool tech but it’s, like, for a consumer, it requires projectors and things. It’s really super-neat if you’re in the lab and you’ve got Microsoft money and you could totally set up this awesome lab, but... we looked at it, but for an average customer it’s, like, thousands of dollars [for the set up]."
Illumiroom was unveiled at CES and, along with a Kinect and projector, “augments the area surrounding a television screen with projected visualizations to enhance the traditional living room entertainment experience.”

Welp. Boom goes the dynamite.

I wonder what makes it so expensive. I thought it would be a couple of hundred quid at most.

hilarious

It's not that its expensive ...they just know that it is a waste of money and it would flop.

I'm kinda surprised by this. I would have thought it would be less expensive than these VR headsets companies are working on.

Its a neat proposal and cool concept. But not that cool. And from what I saw it needs a GOOD projector which is always gonna cost a couple stacks easy. Some of the "features" looked annoying as hell. Maybe you could market this as a add-on to people who already own projectors, but its not gonna be the revolution that Oculus Rift is.
