PIMS gives biometric workforce management the thumbs up
November 26, 2012 -
The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) will introduce a biometric workforce management system to track the attendance of its over 4,500 employees, as attendance remains an issue.
Referring to sources inside the hospital, Dawn.com reports that PIMS employees will have to use a thumbprint scanner when entering and leaving the premises.
The recurring issue of employee attendance, particularly considering heads of departments, senior physicians and medical and house officers was also reported to the Ministry of Capital Administration and Development.
Currently, the hospital uses attendance sheets and a manual sign-in process to keep track of hours and attendance.
A PIMS official suggests that this issue is widespread across the entire organization, and senior physicians don’t even bother to sign in or register to show their presence at the hospital.

Biometric identification now mandatory for those needing revenue department services in New Delhi
January 2, 2013 -

Biometric identification will be mandatory from now on in New Delhi for those looking to register property or their marriage, The Times of India reports.

This now means that along with any other necessary documentation, an Aadhaar Unique Identification (UID) number or an enrollment slip proving biometric registration will be necessary to procure property in India.

The revenue department will be the first of many government departments to make biometric identification proof mandatory for its services, and others are soon to follow. As soon as this new requirement came into effect at the beginning of 2013, there was much confusion as many who came to take advantage of the department’s services were caught off guard when asked for UID numbers.

Natural Security and Discover offer secure biometric payments
November 5, 2012 -
Natural Security, a strong authentication technology company based in France, has announced a partnership with Discover Financial Services (Discover), a leading U.S. payments company, to experiment with Natural Security’s touchless biometric solution.
Discover will integrate Natural Security’s hands-free biometric strong authentication solution, enabling customers to execute simple and convenient, highly secure payment transactions with a biometric reader and wireless customer device.
“I believe that leaving your card in your pocket, simply touching a reader, and having the peace-of-mind that your payment is secured by your fingerprint is a right step in delivering (a) desired payment experience,” said Discover’s Global Head of Emerging Payments, Troy Bernard. “Equally important, there is minimal impact to the existing payments infrastructure as the transaction can be magnetic stripe or EMV-formatted.”
EMV stands for “Europay, MasterCard and Visa”, a global standard for inter-operation of chip cards, point-of-sale terminals and ATMs

Winthrop University eyes Iris ID access control system
    July 11, 2013 -

South Carolina’s Winthrop University is set to roll out an iris recognition access control system on its campus. The technology for which comes from New Jersey-based Iris ID.

According to a report in WRHI.com, more than 1500 students and staff have enrolled so far for the new system which intends to replace magnetic stripe cards. The system is set to go live doing orientation this summer.

As CNN Money aptly notes, “kids lose their school IDs but they don’t often lose their eyeballs.”

According to Winthrop’s Director of User Support Services, Patrice Bruneau, the idea to implement the system widely across the school campus came after a successful deployment at an on-site daycare center. Apparently, other modalities were considered, though the spread of germs posed by systems which require a physical touch, led the school to test the Iris ID system.

The scanners are expected to cost roughly $2,000 more than existing magnetic stripe readers, as WRHI reports.

July 30, 2013, Cranbury, NJ. - Iris ID Systems Inc., formerly a division of LG Electronics, announced today that Winthrop University based in Rock Hill, South Carolina is rolling out Iris ID iCAM 7000 series to enroll incoming students from the fall semester 2013. The 6,170 student university will begin using the iris recognition technology provided by Iris ID Systems Inc. at the Macfeat Early Childhood Laboratory School, an on-campus kindergarten and pre-school program where education majors are trained and conduct research.

Winthrop University plans to utilize the Iris ID technology in many other areas of the university including the Lois Rhame West Health, Physical Education and Wellness Center, the campus data center, front doors of residence halls, highly sensitive areas in the Chemistry Department, dining facilities, tutoring centers, and the library.

James Hammond, Vice President for Information Technology at Winthrop University said, “While assessing security at the laboratory school, we realized that the kids were always supervised by adult teachers. But what happens when an adult, some unauthorized, comes to pick one of them up? The teacher has to leave the children unattended to answer the door. We dismissed the idea of card ID only solutions because they are not very secure and we had concerns that a parent or guardian would lose their ID card or forget to carry it with them. Also, an ID card can get lost or might be stolen, and if a loss or theft hasn’t been reported, the card will still work.”

Mohammed Murad, Vice President of Iris ID Systems Inc. said, "We are very proud and excited to be part of the implementation of iris technology at Winthrop University. This is a strategic implementation for Iris ID in the education market. After the recent events at school campuses, iris recognition systems provide a perfect solution for adding an effective layer of security at
    school campuses.”

Argentinian bank wins award for disbursement project with Lumidigm sensors

    October 3, 2013 -
Lumidigm has announced that Banco Supervielle, a major Argentinian bank, has won an innovation award for a biometric identification project, which leverages Lumidigm multispectral readers.

The bank’s project is aimed at pensioners receiving monthly stipends. Pensioners scan their fingerprint to verify identity, and then are given the stipend. Specifically, the bank was given a FELABAN Financial Innovation Award at the FELABAN CLAB 2013 Congress in Miami earlier this month.

Lumidigm’s multispectral sensors are now being installed in 77 bank branches throughout the country in support of this project, and were provided to the Argentinian bank by its local integrator, TEKSOL S.A.

In the first phase of the project, Banco Supervielle is enrolling 1 million retirees using enrollment stations and terminals with Lumidigm’s V-Series readers. A second phase is being considered that would extend biometric authentication to all of the bank’s customers to facilitate other banking services.

Lumidigm also recently announced that its V-series multispectral sensors had been deployed across the Baltimore/Washington International airport for tarmac access control.
