are going to sign up for the Affordable Care Act?

I need enough of you young people to sign up in order to subsidize the costs for older people like me.

If this is true it's definitely ironic since it's supposed to be for people who can't afford healthcare otherwise.

I'm thinking, though, that the question is intended to see if you qualify for a subsidy or Medicaid.

    @Kat

    Not necessarily.

The individual mandate gives you a "choice".....lol, if you can call it that....between signing up or paying a penalty of $95 or 1% of your adjusted gross income; whichever is higher.

The $95 option is only available for the first year.

    After that it's 1%.

On the surface, this would seem like enough motivation to get insurance.

However, if the monthly premiums are significantly higher than 1% of your AGI, it might make more financial sense to take the penalty depending on how much disposable income you have.

If someone's making $25,000/yr, their penalty would only be $250.

If their insurance premiums would be $200/month ($2,400/yr)....there's a strong chance that they'd opt for the penalty.

I'll just let them take the penalty for not being insured out of my tax refund.

And I'll make sure there is no refund to subtract from.

Let them figure out the rest.

Yeah but that penalty will somewhat subsidize those little trips to the emergency room due to no insurance, right?

I'm going to see what the ACA has to offer and possibly sign up if it's cheaper than what I'm paying now...if I even qualify.

To an extent, but the major funding for the subsidies is going to come from the millions of people who are expected to sign up for the ACA.

That's why supporters are trying so hard to convince young people that they need to sign up for their own good.

If enough healthy young people don't sign up, the whole thing falls apart.

I think if people approached this with an open mind and at least tried to make it work, it might turn out to be a great thing for our country.

But of course that will never happen and we'll continue to pretend like there is nothing wrong with our healthcare system and fight any type of change tooth and nail.

You're not going to be keeping more money should you become seriously ill though.

I know you probably feel you're above pesky little diseases such as cancer or heart disease, but even you are susceptible.

In the theoretical world where I can sick, I'd just sign up for healthcare during the next enrollment period; since preexisting conditions won't matter.

No point in paying for it while I'm healthy and don't need it, if I can get it after-the-fact.
