A man apparently disillusioned with his life and jealous of others who had found success in the United States was arrested on Sunday in the fatal stabbings of a woman and her four children at their apartment in Brooklyn, the police said.

The man, Mingdong Chen, 25, a cousin of the children’s father, had been staying with the family for about a week, the police said. It was unclear why Mr. Chen turned his rage on the family, although he made statements at the scene and during an interrogation on Sunday connecting him to the crime, the authorities said.

The victims were identified as Qiao Zhen Li, 37, Linda Zhuo, 9, Amy Zhuo, 7, Kevin Zhuo, 5, and William Zhuo, 1.

Relatives of Ms. Li’s — her husband, sister, brother-in-law and another family member — told detectives that Mr. Chen had attacked the family. Ms. Li’s sister called 911 after the brutal attack, the police said.

During police questioning, Mr. Chen said that “since he’s been in this country, everyone seems to be doing better than him,” said Chief Philip Banks, the Police Department’s highest-ranking uniformed member. “We’re not really sure what that means. But that is the only thing that we have now.”

The authorities responded to reports of a stabbing around 11 p.m. at a home on 57th Street near Ninth Avenue in Sunset Park, the police said. When officers arrived, they discovered a grisly scene in the family’s three-room, first-floor apartment in a largely Chinese section of the neighborhood. Three of the children — Linda, Amy and William — were found stabbed to death in a back bedroom, the police said. Ms. Li was unconscious in the kitchen, along with her son Kevin; both were taken to area hospitals, where they died shortly after.

Chief Banks said the police had not previously been called to the address for any trouble. “What we have is just a normal family who unfortunately was the victim of an unspeakable act,” he said.

During his questioning at the 66th Precinct station house, Mr. Chen became violent, apparently striking an officer at one point, the police said. The suspect told detectives that he had used a large kitchen knife – described by the authorities as a meat cleaver – as his weapon, the police said. The stab wounds were made to the upper parts of their bodies.

When detectives first arrived at the scene, Chief Banks said, Mr. Chen was covered in blood. “It’s just a scene that you will never forget,” he added.

Police officials said Mr. Chen came to the United States in 2004, and most recently lived in Chicago; they said he was unemployed.

Mr. Chen was charged with several counts of murder, in addition to assault, stemming from the attack in the station house.
