This is inspired by the "So Eminem made 9 disses to Benzino" thread.
I can remember back in the 80s. You had KRS vs MC Shan/Juice Crew and there was LL vs Kool Moe Dee. Those battles basically took 2 songs per person to decide the winner. KRS had "South Bronx" and "The Bridge is Over". Those two songs basically put a serious dent in MC Shan's armor and he never regained his popularity. The LL vs Moe Dee beef was Moe Dee throwing darts with "How Do You Like Me Now", "Let's Go" and the awful "Deathblow". LL pretty much won the battle with "Jack the Ripper" and then "To Da Break of Dawn".
In the 90s there were beefs, most notably Tupac's "Hit Em Up" which was a 'one and your done' battle
There were other battles in the 90s that went back and forth like NWA vs Cube or Common vs Cube. Also LL vs Canibus.
But in the 2000s something strange happenned. It seemed like making diss records was a new phenomenon and (I'm just speculating) it seemed that with the internet and home computers, you could make a record dissing somebody for very little studio cost. Maybe that's why diss songs became so prevelant in the 2000s.
But if you take it to the Nas vs Jay beef, there were still only 2 rounds. Each rapper made two songs dissing the other and then the fans decided the winner.
But now, or really since 50 Cent/Eminem, it seems like wax beefs take years, decades, if not entire careers to determine a winner. I haven't heard all of them but I heard D-Block was making entire mixtapes dissing G-Unit. Somebody mentioned something about Joe Buddens still dissing people like 10 years after the fact. I've heard that Game is a chronic disser although besides "300 Bars", I haven't really heard him go hard (no ? ).
So how many disses does it take to beat your opponent? Seems like you should be able to put out one song that throws the first jab and then wait for your opponent to respond. Then you respond to THAT and you're finished, or he's finished.
These modern day diss rappers that just go around making entire mixtapes dissing people and throwing subliminals are lame. They're boring. And this isn't aimed at Kendrick Lamar. I've heard the "Control freestyle" and I liked it. That's not what I'm talking about. That seems more like friendly competition. I'm talking about people who try to make a career out of dissing and can't sell any records...so they diss.
How many songs/freestyles should it take for a good battle MC to defeat his opponent?

It takes about 1 or 2 max from each for the audience to determine a "winner" . Some ? just like droppin multiple diss tracks for the ? of it. Pac has atleast 6 other tracks dissing Big , besides hit em up.
-
As many as it takes to get he job done.
-
Yeah but Pac didn't need anything after "Hit Em Up". There isn't/wasn't really anything to be said after "Hit Em Up" goes off.
I think "Hit Em Up" is the type of diss that no matter how hard you try, you'll never say anything as disrespectful as "I ? your wife" -
2-3 max.......anything after that is lame and borderline creepy/infatuation.
-
^^^cosign
-
As many as it takes for the artist to feel satisfied, it will die down eventually.
? Jay and Nas were still dissing eachother even after Ether and takeover was dropped. Just didnt really dedicate whole songs anymore. -
One
Nas won with Ether
Even though Pac dropped numerous disses he won with Hit Em Up
Mariah won with Obsessed -
It it only takes 1 to set the standard. If the opponent can't match the standard set from the other emcee, he lost.
There is no limit as to how many, just as long as they keep getting better. -
however many songs it takes for The Reason to agree you won the battle
-
I don't think there should be a certain limit....as long as you can keep coming with new things to say and turning it into great music and you're not sounding repetitive I don't see the problem with more then 3....I mean look at how many jay and nas sent at each other it was more then just takeover and ether but it wasn't seen as a problem becuz it was great music and in the end that's all that matters
-
Saigon vs Joe Budden was the last good hip hop battle, and went under the radar because of that 50 vs Ross, Pac never won no damn battle by the way
-
The best hip hop battles in history usually go about 2 rounds, but there's no rules to this ?
-
Example:
Nas sent an official shot with Stillmatic freestyle, Jay responded with Takeover, Nas took it even higher with Ether, Jay puts out lackluster SuperUgly which was by far the worst response in the entire battle.
Conclusion: Jay can't hang, Jay loses.
Once the other person raises the bar to a certain level, you have to respond at that level or higher. If you don't, you lose. It's that simple.
That's why Nas was talking about playing chess and the art of war and all that ? . You have to know when to go all the way in and when to just send a shot. Timing is everything. -
The world may never know...

I decide at one everything else is just entertainment
