I'm watching it right now.

I remember my art teacher played this movie for us in class. Smh...blew my damn mind. First time ever seeing a violent animated movie. First anime. I didn't even know they made them that violent until I watched Akira.

Kaneda had the sickest bike. Saw this as a kid when my cousin bought it over along with Vampire Hunter D and the Fist of the North Star. Anime has never been that good since.
-
Saw that ? on last night while flipping channels. Never been a fan of it.
-
Akira is GOAT. kinda confusing though.
Vampire Hunter D, Ghost In The Shell, Princess Mononoke, Ninja Scroll those are some more elite anime movies. -

Never liked the film. Great art and animation but the story makes no sense.
-
I first saw this ? way back in the day when TBS used to randomly play anime at like 2 or 3 in the morning. That's how I first saw Vampire Hunter D and Ninja Scroll too. I'll be honest. It took me about three times watching it to understand what was going on, but that could be because I was half asleep the first two times. Still, it's a great movie. I wouldn't put it on the level as the other two I mentioned, but its classic.

Y'all keep sayin "understand what was going on"...So, what was going on?...What's your take on the purpose or message of the movie...?

Seems that the movie is about human evolution, the next step of human evolution. The power Tetsuo gained was said to live within everyone and when it awakens you choose how to use it and he chose to use the power recklessly. He was filled with resentment and jealousy so his powers manifested In dangerous ways and he lost control, he was consumed by them.
-
the manga ? all over the anime but it's still pretty ?
-
-
I just watched the '85 VHD...That ? was cool...Dorris got some pretty tittaaaaays...
-
Cool movie for what it was. Mad overrated IMO.
Ninja Scroll and Sword of the Stranger>>>> to me.
I don't get to watch much anime tho

^This. Just to expand on it a little, Tetsuo wasn't just reckless. He was a product of his environment, so the things he did with the power didn't just reflect on him, they reflected on humanity in general. That's why the kids basically said that humanity wasn't ready for the power. Also, on a side note, you can clear see how the Atom bombing still affect the Japanese psyche. Akira came out damn near half a century after the bombings and the references to them and what they did to Japan are still prominent. -
For years I thought the movie was about the after effects of another nuclear war turning some people into superhumans. It took some time to get where they were coming from even though they flatly said that those abilities already existed.
It was the akira remnants in the jars tht threw me off.
