BAFTA Nominations 2014 Announced!
Gravity has 11 nods, ahead of American Hustle & 12 Years A Slave

This morning in London saw the release of the 2014 British Academy Film Award nominations, and leading the pack is Gravity with 11 nominations, just ahead of 12 Years A Slave and American Hustle with 10 nominations each.

That said, given that Gravity is defined as a British film and therefore gets a shot at the additional category of Best British film, it's essentially a three-way tie between the films for head of the pack. Captain Phillips is just behind with nine nominations, while Saving Mr. Banks and Behind The Candelabra each get five. Philomena, Rush and The Wolf Of Wall Street each get four.

The latter film was unlucky to miss out on a Best Film nod, although Martin Scorsese is nominated as Best Director, which suggested that BAFTA voters - like their Oscar brethren, reportedly - were a little shocked at the sex and drugs and stockbroking in the film.

And while you may not have thought this was a particularly strong year for homegrown films, there are no fewer than six nominees for Best British film, albeit that definition seems to include Saving Mr. Banks, which wasn't even filmed here.

In the acting categories, there are few surprises in the lead actor and actress groups, with very well-deserved nods to the likes of Tom Hanks for Captain Phillips, Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf Of Wall Street, Emma Thompson for Saving Mr. Banks and Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine. It's perhaps a surprise that Robert Redford missed out for All Is Lost, and the almost total shut-out of Inside Llewyn Davis and star Oscar Isaac is a shame, but otherwise it's a strong line-up.

In supporting actress, it's no surprise to see Blue Jasmine's Sally Hawkins, American Hustle's Jennifer Lawrence or 12 Years A Slave's Lupita N'Yongo listed; Julia Roberts and Oprah Winfrey were perhaps less of a lock but both are worthy additions. In supporting actor, it was great to see Barkhad Abdi get a nod for Captain Phillips, alongside the higher profile likes of Michael Fassbender.

This year's British Academy Film Awards take place on February 16, at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden once again. Stephen Fry is hosting, and Empire will be covering it on the night. In the meantime, here are the nominees...

sci fi always gets overlooked in awards but I got a feeling gravity will clean up this year.everything else will go to 12 years.too close to call between them two in most of the major awards.

BAFTAs 2014: The Winners In Full
It's a good night for Gravity

16 February 2014 | Written by Ben Kirby | Source: BAFTA

The 2014 EE British Academy Film Awards took place on a surprisingly dry and pleasant evening at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, and it was a night without too many surprises.

The Full List Of Winners (below)
The Live Ceremony, As It Happened

The Red Carpet Arrivals - As It Happened

The big winner of the evening - both in numbers and in spirit - was Gravity, with a grand total of 6 awards. It won Outstanding British Film for producers David Heyman and Alfonso Cuaron, as well as gongs for Best Director, Cinematography, Sound, Original Music and Special Visual Effects.

But the big award of the evening - Best Film - went to 12 Years A Slave, which also captured Best Actor courtesy of Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Though the film didn't take home the big prizes, the feel-good win of the night was surely Barkhad Abdi, who won Best Supporting Actor for Captain Phillips.

American Hustle got the BAFTA for Original Screenplay, and deservedly took home Best Hair & Make Up, so all those tiny hair curlers and comb-over wigs didn't go to waste. Elsewhere in the more aesthetic categories, The Great Gatsby had a good evening, winning for both Production Design and Costume Design.

Best Editing went to Rush, with Ron Howard accepting the gong on behalf of his regular editors Dan Hanley and Mike Hill.

Joshua Oppenheimer won Best Documentary for his extraordinary film, The Act Of Killing, and took the opportunity to speak out about the Indonesian genocide.

Two wins, however, were no surprise at all, given they were pre-announced. Peter Greenaway was awarded a BAFTA for Outstanding Contribution to British Film, while Dame Helen Mirren won the Academy Fellowship.

Stephen Fry did an admirable job as the bearded master of cermonies, entertaining the absurdly famous and beautiful audience with his soothing, tweed-infused tones. No Gervais-esque controversies to be found here, people, though he did take the opportunity to flirt with Leonardo DiCaprio, Sam Claflin and Douglas Booth. But if we're honest, who wouldn't?

You can read our minute-by-minute accounts of tonight's ceremony and the red carpet, where you'll see our real-time thoughts and terrible jokes about tonight's winners, losers and wardrobe malfunctions (maybe).

The full list of nominees and winners is below.
