Hip-Hop wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for the art of sampling. And while producers have increasingly relied on original sound design and live instrumentation in recent years, the practice is still an important part of the culture.
Curious about the history, hip-hop website DJBooth recently asked the folks at WhoSampled which producers have sampled the most in hip-hop. While their database isn’t one hundred percent accurate, it’s considered the most comprehensive on the web and the list they came up with is interesting never-the-less.
1. DJ Premier: 1,458
2. Girl Talk: 1,046
3. Madlib: 968
4. DJ Shadow: 850
5. Dr. Dre: 825
6. Pete Rock: 815
7. J Dilla: 773
8. Alchemist: 725
9. 9th Wonder: 706
10. Marley Marl: 675

Interesting... but is Girl Talk really a hip hop producer? I thought he (It?) was more of a EDM dj...

I don't know, I've never heard of Girl Talk until I saw that list. -
Kanye not in the top 10?
yeah that list is invalid. ? stays sampling -
Madlib is too dope with the samples, especially the way he can incorporate TV shows/movies without it being corny

Then put Prince Paul on the list, he got Kanye by leaps and bounds, Q-Tip, Large Professor, ? a whole bunch of them.
And somebody stated in a another thread, I miss the jazz and old soul samples -

naw dude, use your brain
alchemist and 9th wonder been producing for the same amount of time as Kanye give or take a few years yet they made the list
all those solo albums he's produced plus all the music he's produced for others, around 90% of his catalog is based on samples and that's a generous number
I'm shocked rza isn't on the list either -
Alchemist has produced a ton more than kanye tho
-
On top of that you gotta add How many different samples are used in one song each
-
PREEMO is the goat when it comes to sampling...
Just Blaze has done so many gems though... -
Girltalk has some crazy blends. They blend hiphop with whatever they can find. Gotta be a fan of DJ type ? tho
-
Thought Dre would be at the top.
-
Me personally if I was a producer, I wouldn't want to be in the top 10 of this list. Sampling is good but it shouldn't be what u'r known for.
-
Wow......Kanye isn't on the list at all.... 8 albums full of sampled work not to mention the work he done for others over time... I'm actually shocked.

Kanye songs don't contain many different samples though
Dre and the others frequently use many different song samples in a given record -
Surprised Q Tip is not on the list. Q Tipis rresponsible for a lot of you cats favorite producers beats that he helps them with....
-
as soon as I read the thread title premo popped in my head, a true hip hop legend ? kanye.

Yeah Q Tip has a lot of classic beats that contain samples, but he hasn't produced as much material as some of the producers on the list. Think about it, besides his work with A Tribe Called Quest, what has be done? -
THE BEASTIE BOYS: PAUL'S BOUTIQUE ALBUM

I would imagine those guys use multiple samples per song, especially Girl Talk, dude samples like 8 songs at a time or some ?
