If he's a greyshirt or medical redshirt, then yeah I could see that happening. He might be an upcoming 5th year senior with an medical redshirt enabling him to play even though his original eligibility ran out.
Also this isn't on Watts. This is Paul Bryant Jr (Bear Bryant's son) using the UAT (U of Alabama Trustee) to shut down UAB. Jr and Bear have been beefing with UAB since it was first founded...also this beef started over basketball (UAB AD/Coach Barstow).

Sometimes, I don't think people understand how much of themselves these athletes invest into trying to succeed in sports. I feel what you saying, but if all you've been thinking about since you were in elementary school is playing football, and then someone comes along and tells you that's not an option, you not necessarily going to see the silver lining right away.
