Ezell Ford Autopsy Shows He Was Shot by Police 3 Times: Report

An autopsy report showing LAPD officers shot 25-year-old Ezell Ford three times, including once in the back, was set to be released to his family on Monday and then discussed publicly by Chief Charlie Beck.

The report was made public more than four months after the Aug. 11 shooting, which caused an outcry from family members and supporters who said Ford was complying with officers’ demands and was on the ground when he was shot several times in the back.

The document showed Ford was shot three times, once in the right side, once in the right back and once in the right arm, according to the report posted by the Los Angeles Times.

In the area of the gunshot wound to his back, the “surrounding skin has muzzle imprint,” the report stated. Ford’s side and back wounds were fatal, and his cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at California Hospital two hours after the shooting, the report states.

The family was first set to be able to review the Los Angeles County coroner’s findings before the report was made public, LAPD Officer Liliana Preciado said.

Chief Charlie Beck was then expected to address the media regarding the autopsy at 2:30 p.m. at police headquarters.

The LAPD, which had put a monthslong security hold on the autopsy report, has said Ford reached for an officer’s holstered weapon during a struggle.

The shooting had prompted multiple rallies and marches in Ford’s name, along with comparison to other fatal police shootings of unarmed black men that have generated headlines across the country. More rallies and marches were expected Monday.

At a Nov. 13 news conference, L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti announced that he had ordered the LAPD to release the autopsy results in Ford’s death by the end of the year. He and Beck also reiterated their plea for eyewitnesses to the incident to come forward.

We want the truth. We want witnesses’ statements to be as untainted as possible,” Beck said at the time. “That is why we’ve held this autopsy. But we have not intention of denying the family or this community access to that autopsy forever.”

He added that the report contains “significant evidence” that could “add credibility” to witness statements.

The incident that culminated in Ford’s death began when officers responded to the intersection of West 65th Street and South Broadway on the night of Aug. 11, the LAPD said.

They approached Ford for an “investigative stop,” during which a struggle ensued and police opened fire, the department said. The LAPD has not explained what prompted the officers to stop Ford.

The report’s release comes a day after two LAPD officers were fired upon not far from where Ford was shot. Police called it an “ambush” and an “unprovoked attack.” A rifle was found at the scene, and one man was taken into custody. The search for a second man was halted after several hours and a citywide tactical alert.
