CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- A grand jury indicts a West Virginia mother on charges that she intentionally put ? matter into her son's IV as he received treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.

Candida Fluty, of Kermit West Virginia, is charged with felonious assault and two counts of endangering children.

Her nine-year-old son, Elijah. was born with Hirschsprung, which affects the bowels. The Hamilton County prosecutor's office says the nine-year-old has had several surgeries and has a colostomy bag. He was last admitted to Cincinnati Children's Hospital this month.

According to the prosecutor's officer, Fluty's son spiked a fever shortly after the feces was put into his IV. The boy is now in the custody of West Virginia Children's Services and is living with an aunt.

Prosecutor Joe Deters said in a release, “Although rare, we have seen similar cases with similar motivations. I’m just grateful that it was caught before we were confronted with a murder case.”
