Limbo is a puzzle-platform game developed by independent Danish PlayDead Studios and released on July 21, 2010 exclusively on Xbox Live Arcade. The game is a 2D sidescroller, incorporating a physics system that governs environmental objects and the player character, challenging the player to guide a unnamed boy through dangerous environments and avoiding numerous traps that lie in shadow. The game is presented primarily in greyscale, and uses minimal sounds outside of ambient effects. Prior to its release, the title won two Independent Games Festival awards, and the full game received strong praise from the gaming community upon release.
