Jefferson replicating, surpassing Preston Smith's stats
STARKVILLE -- Five Mississippi State defenders finished last season with at least six tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Four were starters, three were drafted by NFL teams in May.
Then there’s A.J. Jefferson. As a sophomore second-teamer, Jefferson finished with seven tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. In a full-time role as a junior, the Summit native is replicating the numbers that pushed Preston Smith from undrafted to the second round of last year's NFL Draft.
“I think you saw him last year coming into it a little bit,” MSU coach Dan Mullen said. “He’s always a tough guy to block in practice. I think I started seeing the maturity in him last year. The maturity in becoming a really good football player on every down.”
Through five games, Jefferson has already eclipsed his number from last year. He leads the team with 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. He also leads all MSU defensive linemen with 26 tackles.
Jefferson replaced Smith, who exploded onto the scene last year. Smith won Southeastern Conference defensive lineman of the week the first three weeks of last season.
Some of Smith’s numbers don’t compare favorably to Jefferson’s this season. Smith had 11 fewer tackles, three fewer tackles for loss and the same number of sacks through five games. The current lineman for Washington, though, also had two interceptions and two blocked field goals.
“Really, they’re two completely different players. Preston is a little more finesse guy. A.J. is a little more nuts and bolts kind of guy,” MSU defensive line coach David Turner said. “But it doesn’t surprise me.”
Jefferson has improved his numbers each season on campus. He’s already established career-bests in tackles for loss and sacks and needs three tackles to set a new high-water mark in that category.
“I think he plays smart, and I think that comes with understanding football, understanding offense,” Turner said. “He’s aware. He understands the game. All those contribute to having him make plays.”
Jefferson is coming off his worst statistical game of the season with two tackles, one for a loss. The 6-foot-3, 277-pounder has recorded a tackle for loss in six straight games.
He currently ranks second in the SEC with 8.5 tackles for loss and 11th nationally.
Last year, Smith finished with 15 tackles for loss, which was sixth-most in school history.
Jefferson is on pace for 22 tackles for loss, which would eclipse Willie Evans by one for the most in program history in a single season.
The total combined with his 11 tackles for loss in his first two seasons would place Jefferson fifth all-time at MSU.
“His numbers don’t really surprise me,” Turner said. “I expected him to put up good numbers. Hopefully he can continue to make some big plays for us.”
