I know most of the people on this message board are too young to remember the Treacherous Three in their prime. I barely remember them myself, although I do remember seeing Beat Street In the theater. It wasn't really until the internet came out that I had access to a lot of the old school rap that I was too young to appreciate when it was out. Also, through the internet I got access to the live tapes that people in New York used to trade. Quite frankly I was too young to remember the Kool Moe Dee vs Busy B battle.

Eric B. & Rakim & The Juice Crew were not rap groups. One was an MC with A DJ, the other was different artist on the same label"

Not enough material or lasting impact from the group itself

This thread might go off on a tangent, but how can you rank other groups higher than the originators of the art form? The Treacherous 3 aren't the first to do it, but they were doing it before The Sugarhill Gang. They just didn't release a record until 1980. Treacherous Three is amongst the first.

    But Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 released two records in 1979. They have tapes from 1978. There's documented evidence and eyewitness accounts that Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5 are essentially the first rap group. They made gold and platinum records, classic singles and are recognized by the greater music industry by their induction in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. They have records that have been preserved by the Library of Congress;

Every year, the US Library of Congress selects a batch of 25 audio recordings it deems “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant.” The records are chosen for preservation in the National Recording Registry. Selected recordings span eras and genres. They include civil rights speeches, comedy albums, jazz classics and, yes, a handful of hip-hop records. (Recordings have to be at least 10 years old to be eligible for induction.)

The Six Hip Hop Records Recognized By The Library of Congress

Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five - "The Message"
Public Enemy - 'Fear of a Black Planet'
    Tupac Shakur - "Dear Mama"
De La Soul - '3 Feet High & Rising'
Sugar Hill Gang - "Rapper's Delight"
Lauryn Hill - 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill'

Yeah, I know, I'm not gonna let some old white men tell me whats hot, but the fact that The Message was the first rap record to be recognized by the Library of Congress is saying something.

Just because you're the originator don't mean you can't get surpassed.

we've gone over this, early hip hop wasn't quality music....it sounded real amateur hour, so if they are the originators or not doesn't mean I have to respect them if I didn't enjoy their music or what they were doing

even as a little kid the people would play this stuff and I wasn't into it, I've said it before if hip hop didn't evolve and iron out it's sound I probably wouldn't have been an overall fan

If early Hip Hop wasn't quality music why did it sell more than the stuff that comes out now?

    Yeah I'm serious

    How many units do you think these records sold;

    The Breaks - Kurtis Blow
    Rappers Delight - Sugarhill Gang
Superrappin - Grandmaster Flas and the Furious 5
The Message - Grandmaster Flash and The Furious 5
White Lines - Grandmaster and Melle Mel
    Spoonin Rap - Spoonie G
    Love Rap - Spoonie G
Funk You Up - The Sequence
    Rapture - Blondie
Thats The Joint - Funky 4+1

^^^ Look up those sales figures. You probably won't find anything but looking them up is a good exercise...arguably an exercise in futility.

you can't compare album sales from the 80's when ppl had to go to the store to buy music as opposed to 2015 when ppl download everything....so I could care less what their album sales were

and as we all know, sales doesn't mean your album is good....if that what the case we should also listen to taylor swift and a bunch of country music

No but they could rock a party more than most of the groups listed here. It would be interested to see acts that made music just for party venues.

I 100% know hip hop is a thousand times more popular then it ever was

    It's world wide now.

You have hip hop in every part of the media now

The only reason sales is worst because of ppl downloading free music.

I remember when I was a kid my mom had no burnt CDs

Fast forward 20 years and my mom has a ? ton of burnt music and music in her phone she didn't pay for

    You sir are an idiot.
