2 Additional Alien Prequels Set To Be Released

Things have been active in the Alien and Prometheus camp over the last few weeks. First, Neill Blomkamp still has tentative plans for an Alien sequel that features Hicks and an adult Newt. However, before then, Ridley Scott will release his Prometheus sequel, Alien: Covenant. The renowned director, in Australia to begin pre-production on the new film, has also announced that two additional sequels are in the works.

When pondering the origin of the titular monsters, Scott decided to string together not one but three prequel sequels, joking that his inspiration was the now expansive Star Wars franchise “juggernaut.” Prometheus apparently kicked off a long chain of events that will connect the esoteric prequel to original 1979 sci-fi chiller – a connection which Scott now clarifies.

Alien: Covenant will explore the origins of the xenomorphs, while also answering a few nagging questions, such as “why was this space jockey [on the uncharted planetoid] and why did he have an Alien inside him?” Talking with THR, Scott outlined the plan for a new movie trilogy to follow the events of Prometheus:

“So I’m now going to the next one, which is the next evolution directly connected with the first one, which was this Shaw, when he replaced Michael Fassbender in two pieces and we’ll kind of pick it up there and it will evolve. When that’s finished there’ll be another one and then another one which will gradually drive into the back entrance of the film in 1979.”

Before Covenant begins shooting around Australia – where the director wants to shoot all 3 sequels – Scott confirmedthat Noomi Rapace (Elizabeth Shaw) will only have a small role in the sequel. He also explored his modus operandi behind Prometheus in depth, explaining that his film was “borne out of my frustration that on Alien 1 in 1979… I was amazed that in the 3 that followed that no-one asked the question “why the Alien, who made it and why?” Scott also expanded upon his desire to helm the entire series, connecting the dots between series with his directorial vision.

It now appears the lynchpin of both the Prometheus and Alien franchises is the xenomorph origin story, one which may tie directly to the creation of the human life as well, via The Engineers. And with a evolving mechanoid as a foil, Scott’s prequel series is poised to break new ground on an old topic. By linking together both series, Scott may finally give hungry fans all the answers to those lingering questions about human life, the universe, and everything Alien.

Hopefully Scott won’t rely on somewhat watered down characters and vague plot points as a backdrop to philosophical exploration, as he did in the original Prometheus.
