The Defence Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has approved a project that may result in soldiers with highly superior cognitive and sensory abilities.
In other words, we may be about to enter the era of cyborg soldiers.
Although DARPA’s primary goal with this project is the development of military technology, the results of this project will surely result in civilian applications in the future as neural interface between the human mind and computers can help create better compensatory solutions for people with vision and hearing problems.
According to DARPA, the project dubbed Neural Engineering System Design (NESD) seeks to develop an implantable bio-compatible device that could act as a translator that converts between the “electrochemical language used by neurons in the brain and the ones and zeros that constitute the language of information technology”.
DARPA anticipates investing up to $60 million in this project over the next four years.
However, for this brain implant to be feasible, DARPA makes it clear that it “will require integrated breakthroughs across numerous disciplines including neuroscience, synthetic biology, low-power electronics, photonics, medical device packaging and manufacturing, systems engineering, and clinical testing.”
Because of this, the agency didn’t set a date for this human-machine interface to be available.
On the other hand, several experts in these fields will be hired to work on the project, which can help create cyborg soldiers with battle capabilities enhanced by digital systems and offer better solutions to civilian health therapies for deficits in sight and hearing.

imagination is the only thing that limits us... which is a good thing but also is a bad thing... I feel that we are not ready for the things we will soon be capable of.... if we can barely handle social media then this ? is going to be something that can do a lot of harm.
