Thats a good question. IMO, it can mean a few things. A different "place" can mean a different level of maturity. A change in a persons consciousness, or vibrating on a different frequency as far as outlook+ perception of your life, we all grow, thats life.

When friends say it....it means they grown out of the ? that yall used to do. See Pac's "I aint mad at cha"

When a Significant Other says it.... means theyr either too ready or ur not

basically means they have outgrown you, or maybe you have outgrown them

in other words, it's time to let it go...........

It could mean that people have different goals in life and/or are on different paths.

Being at a different place in life USUALLY means either
    A) Person is more mature and grown than said person as in they don't even act the same way, don't think the same, might not even be thinkin about the same things etc.
    B) Person is farther than someone else in life...to be straightforward, he/she got their $ on deck... and they don't even do the same ? /partake in the same activities as the other person
These people can have different paths but still have the same goal

If a person says it, that means they've moved on and you gotta let them go but if this is something seen and you can't do anything about it, you pretty much have to let things go anyway. I'm in a similar situation, she's doing her music thing and I'm kinda stuck in a different area but it just means we have to go our separate ways.
