Fresh off of one high-profile remake, Antoine Fuqua is already circling another. The Magnificent Seven director is reportedly in talks to direct a remake of Scarface. Like the 1960 Like the 1960 Magnificent Seven, the 1983 Scarface — the one everyone knows with Al Pacino — is itself a remake. The original original Scarface was a 1932 drama from Howard Hawks and Howard Hughes, and that, in turn, was an adaptation of a 1929 novel.
Deadline broke news of the Antoine Fuqua Scarface remake. Like the other Scarfaces, this one will center on an immigrant who arrives in the U.S. and claws his way to the top of the criminal underworld. In the 1932 film, it was an Italian immigrant, played by Paul Muni, in Chicago. In the 1983 one directed by Brian De Palma, it was a Cuban refugee, played by Al Pacino, in Miami. The latest iteration will move the action to present-day Los Angeles.
We’ve been tracking Universal’s planned Scarface remake for a few years now. The most recent draft of the script comes from Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton). Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco) and David Ayer (Suicide Squad) also previously contributed to the script. David Yates (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and Pablo Larraín (No) have flirted with the directing job at various points.
Fuqua seems like a natural fit for the Scarface remake, as his resume features several crime dramas including The Equalizer, Brooklyn’s Finest, and Training Day. And as The Magnificent Seven shows, he clearly isn’t afraid of remaking classics and potentially attracting the ire of cinephiles. Then again, Fuqua is the kind of in-demand filmmaker who gets linked to lots of projects that never actually happen, and he’s got several projects on his to-do list already including a small-screen adaptation of Mario Puzo’s Omertá with Sylvester Stallone.
The new Scarface remake will be produced by Mark Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark, along with Marty Bergman, who produced the 1983 Scarface. There’s no word yet on when it’ll hit theaters, but it’s described as a “priority” for Universal, so look for more news to come out of this one sooner rather than later.

Nah mayne.

If someone is going to do it Fuqua is cool with me.
-
What y'all think about Johnny Depp taking on the role?
-
Not sure if it's going to be a revisioning with a black lead, but if it is, wouldn't it be a copy of American Gangster?

American Gangster is about a snitch
Scarface went out guns blazin -
Pacino Scarface is a remake. I'm sure they made it about a Cuban immigrant because it was cheaper to film down south.
They can go any way with it really. As long as it's ? . -
Justin beiber as tony Montana!
Gtfoh -
Just don't make Tony latino or italian again and he's good.

They made it about a Cuban because the drug trade in Miami is what was popping with latinos from the streets back in the 80s. Same way the original Scarface was influenced by Capone. -

If they make Tony Irish or Eastern European maybe. -
If they make him west indian or Jamaican get Michael K. Williams.
-
Mario Puzo’s Omertá with Sylvester Stallone.
I'm more interested in this -
Make him middle eastern/Muslim, think way outside the box.

After helping create iconic gangsters on shows like “The Sopranos” and “Boardwalk Empire,” Terence Winter is now ready to tackle another famous crime figure.
Sources tell Variety, Winter has signed on to do a polish of Jonathan Herman’s latest draft of Universal’s new retelling of the “Scarface” story. Given Winter’s expertise creating such characters, and the fact that Winter has real-life relationships with former crime figures, the studio was quick to turn to the writer for “Scarface,” sources said.
Antoine Fuqua is on board to direct.
The film will be a Bluegrass Films and Global Produce production, and will be produced by Marc Shmuger, Scott Stuber, and Dylan Clark. Marty Bregman, producer of the 1983 “Scarface” film, will also produce.
The pic is a reimagining of the core immigrant story told in both the 1932 and 1983 films. The new film will be set in Los Angeles and will focus on a Mexican immigrant.
Exec VP of production Jon Mone and VP of production Jay Polidoro will oversee the project for Universal.
Winter has balanced success in both television and film, having most recently helped created HBO series “Vinyl” following an Oscar nomination for his adaptation of “The Wolf of Wall Street.” Winter is currently producing an untitled LeBron James biopic and has also written an untitled Mike Tyson biopic starring Jamie Foxx.
He also recently signed on to write the Andy Warhol biopic starring Jared Leto and produced Michael De Luca.
He is repped by CAA and Jackoway Tyerman Wertheimer Austen Mandelbaum Morris & Klein.
If they were going to do a Prohibition Era period piece and do the ? in this latest version that they couldn't do in the 30's, it might be cool, but I'm a little apprehensive on this remake of a remake ? . -
Why another latino? Should've at least gone Eastern European or something. Now it won't help but be compared with the '83 version no matter what.
-
They need Michael Mann on this.
-
Another remake of a popular film? Now that's original.

The popular film that itself was a remake of a popular film. -

Maybe because Mexicans are the biggest D boys right now. Like I said, if they are going to do this ? they should have went with the Prohibition Era ? doing what the original did with basing the movie on Al Capone's life. Maybe in this version they'll actually cast Latinos to play Latinos as opposed to Italians and Ashkenazis playing Latinos. -
Yeah if it's in Los Angeles it's clearly going to be about the cartel
-
Won't watch
-
Get Meryl Streep in for the lead and watch it clean up in awards season.

I can see it now. The movie starts off with a montage of the hardships of being po', broke, and strugglin' in Mexico. Tony's mama decides to bring him and his sister into the U.S. illegally. The coyotes try to ? Gina ( or whatever his sister's name will be,) Tony kills the ? coyete, but not before he get his scar.
The story then moves to California's San Joaquin Valley, where we find the Montanas (or whatever they're name will be,) doing migrant framing. Here he meets Manny. They say ? his ? , move to East LA, get hooked in with some Sureños, come up in the game, see the blimp, (if it's paying tribute to the original a billboard,) or if it's modern a banner ad on the lap top, ? off El Chapo, have an epic, shootout, then credits. I wonder will Pacino get a cameo? -
Do something else ? theme play'd out.
