Fifteen years ago a little indie comedy on a modest budget called Super Troopers quietly entered into theaters and thanks to word of mouth, quickly became a cult classic among college students and bear lovers everywhere. It’s not that rare for the general public to latch onto an indie comedy over a big-budget comedy. Besides Super Troopers, Napoleon Dynamite, Juno, and other gems have all enjoyed commercial success, while witty dialog from those films have been permanently etched into the pop culture vernacular.

The first Super Troopers was co-written by Kevin Heffernan and Jay Chandrasekhar (who also directed the movie) and starred members of their comedy troupe Broken Lizard as five Vermont highway patrol officers focusing on all of their syrup-drinking shenanigans: Erik Stolhanske as Rabbit, Steve Lemme as Mac, Kevin Heffernan as Farva, Paul Soter as Foster and Jay Chandrasekhar as Thorny. The movie was full of hilarious (and raunchy) dialogue and is still considered to be some of Broken Lizard’s best work; their sophomore project, Club Dread starring Bill Paxton, pales in comparison.

Fans of the movie have been clamoring for a sequel ever since, but Chandrasekhar (Dukes of Hazzard) moved onto other projects and became quite successful at directing multiple episodes on many hit television shows – Community, The Goldbergs, and Royal Pains. On the Super Troopers 2 website, Chandrasekhar explains why it took so long for the sequel to get off the ground:
We’ve always wanted to make a sequel… but first, we also wanted to run from a killer on an island resort and chug beers against Germans. After that, we had to get permission from the studio, write an awesome script and then wait for lawyers to schedule a sh*tload of conference calls.

With that in mind, the crew started a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, with the goal of raising $2 million, which they hit last April. Now that all the legalities were out of the way, Chandrasekhar was finally able to announce on his Twitter account that filming for Super Troopers 2 is officially underway.

Even though the movie has met its original funding goal, donations are still being accepted with several stretch goals in place. The next goal is set at $4.75 million and if met, the movie will include a “kick-ass chase scene”, that they originally wanted to put in the first movie but didn’t have to budget to pull off. Actor Brian ? (The Bourne Identity) has promised that if the fundraiser-backed project reaches a goal of $5 million, then he’ll return as Captain O’Hagan.

To keep fans engaged, Broken Lizard has been posting regular updates on the movie’s status, including a funny video series on YouTube called #LetFarvaOut. During the 1-minute long videos, the troopers have locked Farva (Kevin Heffernan) in the trunk of his Toyota Camry, checking in on him daily. He’s either singing the blues, making secret confessions or taking pictures of his “little trooper” – watch them all NSFW fun HERE. It’s not much, but it’s something to tide fans of the comedy troupe over until the final movie comes out.
