Tyrese Says a Sequel To John Singleton’s ‘Baby Boy’ Is In the Works

The “Fast & Furious” series is an interesting one for many reasons, but in part because of how self-contained the stars who appear in it are. Together, as a family, the crew are a giant draw, with “The Fate Of The Furious” once again busting blocks at the box office right now. But separately, bar relative latecomer Dwayne Johnson, most of the other stars of the series, even Vin Diesel (whose “? : The Return Of Xander Cage” severely underperformed domestically, though made up to some extent internationally), struggle to attract crowds to their own movies.
Still, it undoubtedly gives them some heat separately, and at least one star appears to be using that heat to get a passion project going. Actor/singer Tyrese (who also returns to another big franchise this summer with “Transformers: The Last Knight”) posted on Instagram over the weekend that he looks to be returning to his earliest notable movie role, John Singleton’s “Baby Boy.”
Released in 2001, the film, which was seen as something of a return to the form of “Boyz N The Hood” for Singleton, starred Tyrese (in a role originally intended for Tupac Shakur) as Jody, a young bike mechanic with two young children, who comes into conflict with the ex (Snoop Dogg) of his girlfriend (Taraji P. Henson, also in her film debut). The star’s post (via The Jasmine Brand) doesn’t give much away, but does suggest a new title, “Baby Boy: Coming Of Age,” and that Singleton might well be involved.
We liked the first film a fair bit, and the idea of a sequel 18 years on, presumably focusing on Jody’s kids, is an intriguing thought. We’re sure firmer news will come along about the project soon, so keep your eyes peeled until then.
