Couple weeks ago went back and forth with a poster who was doubting the legitimacy of schools simply not giving a ? if student athletes actually got educated...well now a school district has done this
Dayton Public School's Board of Education voted to change athletic eligibility for students Tuesday night.
Students will now have to have a 1.0 GPA on a 4.0 grading scale to be eligible to play. Those students with a GPA between 1.0 and 1.99 must enroll in the school's Athletic Academic Intervention Program for at least one calendar year and make 'satisfactory progress toward the established goal of a 2.0 GPA each academic quarter'.
They also said that students are allowed to participate in extracurricular activities if they have passed a minimum of five one-credit courses in the immediately preceding grading period, even if that student also earned a failing grade.
"That's what this plan is about," said Board of Education President Dr. Robert Walker. "It's ensuring that all of our students are excelling, especially those who are participating in extra-curricular activities."
The board approved the plan 4-1, with Adil Baguirov abstaining from voting. Joe Lacey was the only board member to vote 'no.' Lacey said he's in favor of more academic resources for low-performing students, but believes the bar would be set too low, and feared the change would be viewed negatively by the public.
"To bring them into the academic process and tell them they have to have a 'D' at least, I really don't think it's that much to ask of our students to keep a 'C' average."
The board didn't address whether the changes had anything to do with an ineligible Dunbar High School player, that led to Dunbar attempting to throw a game last season.
FOX 45's Shavon Anderson was told that the intention behind the change is to draw kids in who may be out on the streets and to increase the focus on education and tutoring.

Expectations are way too low -
Thats ridiculous they shouldnt be on a team.. whoever thought this was a great idea should be ? slapped.. but the people that would benefit from this are too stupid to know they are being used.....

Trying to save money
-
Additional ? to help along the path of being set up to fail
-
? , might as well not even require them to go to school.
Just throw a football down the block and whoever catch that ? is on the team.
"Hey everybody, this is 'Homeless Mike', the team's new wide receiver - smells a little bad, but I want y'all to treat him like family." -
Academic institutions should accept nothing less than excellence from all of its students. Also encourage the student body to perform at a level of excellence. They on that ? though
-
And they wonder why China is ahead of us in education
-
Honestly though Bron isnt from Dayton
? should speak up and say ? that
You should raising the bar, not lowering it
? going to be coming out sounding like slaves and ?
But can bounce a ball
Fucc that -
Well that explains this...
-
That's some bull. If your GPA is that low why even go to school yet alone play for a team?
-
This doesn't help black people.

As they should be, the preparation that goes into college football nowadays might as well be an Associates Degree. Added to that the risk of CTE and ur not even getting paid for it. ? ..u shouldn't even have to go to nothing but basics and the major u choose, if that's what u want.
? can make the decision to possibly ? themselves for life but they can decide if they want a degree worth something or not. All eggs one basket..? from the gutter, one shot on ? , there ain't no plan b -
So many kids already go all in on sports as it Is, they are really just going to remove basically all incentive and motivation for these kids to learn? The education system is so jaded.
-
If you pass you should play.

I'm a highschool drop out, but I'm as intelligent as they come. GPA isn't a determining factor of intelligence, commitment, and willingness to learn.
Some people just aren't wired to take on that heavy a load of both physical and mental and maintain in both while being drained of both, is all I'm sayin.
Let a man have the right to choose his level of difficulty instead of holding everyone to the same standard. And shun those that can't live up to it for whatever reason. -
Sports is more important than academics, this country shows that everyday.
Athletes makes far more than educators and even doctors or professors.
Hundreds of millions of dollars are put into stadiums while schools are left to fall apart and/or close.
Follow the money, it always shows you what's important. -
Woooow.....
Thus country never ceases to amaze me -
Wait aren't school district measures a public vote? Parents aint fight this ? ? They aint fighting it now?

Nosign.
You might think that athletes make more than educators, doctors and professors, but there's only 450 players in the NBA, 1,696 players in the NFL, 690 players in the NHL and 750 players in Baseball. The odds of being a professional athlete are astronomical. Furthermore, the owners of those teams make more money than the players. The owners are lawyers and MBAs.
If you're a professional athlete and you score a $100 million contract that's great, but if you don't understand finance then you won't know how to invest your money. You'll end up trusting a stockbroker and he'll rip you off because he thinks your stupid.
We've all heard stories of professional athletes that played long careers and made it to the hall of fame who later filed for bankruptcy because after they retired they had no income and their financial advisors took everything.
If you plan on being a professional athlete the smartest thing you can do is major in finance. Because if you have a $100 Million contract nobody is going to "help" you invest it. You'll be surrounded by sharks and everybody will be looking for a handout. -
