There both in the top 7 IMO. But who deserves to be higher on a GOAT list?

-

-
Big Daddy Kane is better IMO
-
Jay-Z....only because I didn't grow during that time period.....
-
Kane, and I didn't even grow up in that time period.

Big Daddy Kane, yes big not little

Kane, no questions, quite possibly in my top 5 list. But if there's a valid reason to say he shouldn't be in a top 5 is simple... he should have knocked all those AWFUL sucky R&B love songs he was so obsessed with.
I mean I could never understand a single reason to listen to "To Be Your Man", "On the Move", "All of Me", "I'm Not Ashamed", "TLC", "Lover in You" or "Very Special"... He made one good love ballad and that was "The Day You're Mine", mostly because the lyrics were actually good as opposed to the same ol' boring love songs everybody else (including later Kane) did and does. -

That's no excuse. It's not like it's sports and you never saw the guy play, you can listen to the music and form your own decision. -

I wish i grew up during that time period.Hip hop isnt like it used to be

Hip Hop was like that at that time. Kane was just a raw spitter, and musically he was nice. Didn't y'all listen to 'Prince of Darkness'?

I think the newness of Hip Hop had alot to do with it . I am 33 and grew up during that time , but I think that 95-99 or so was the best years . I think the production caught up to the lyrics during those years . I also think that we are at the place now in Hip Hop where the same thing is kinda of happening with these new wave of artist . For along time in the last few years the production was ahead of the artistry and lyrics . -

My brother in law put me on an album called "long live the Kane" you should listen. For the record I think jay>>>Kane, but that's after listening to both artists. -
Jay anyday of the week.
-
No doubt in my mind it's Big Daddy Kane. Do people really rate Jay that High to compare him to Kane? I guess so.
-
Jay-Z IMO, although i like King Asiatic a lot more.
-
Imma go w/ Jay, but either way BK stand the ? up!!!

I go with Jay just for the simple fact Reasonable Doubt is my favorite album of all time, and I believe he put out a better body of work. I'm a fan of Kane, but I think I Get The Job Done derailed what could have been a great career. To me, he started catering to the ladies a little too much after that. I can't fault the brother because I love the ladies too, but as a fan of raw hip hop at that time, the music he made after It's A Big Daddy Thing didn't do it for me. Honestly, I can't see how anyone could pick Kane over Jay if we go by the t/s criteria. I can feel you liking Kane more, but he did provide a guideline to go by. This of course is just my take on it.
