Atlus goes HD in a multiplatform Xbox 360 and PS3 action adventure with adult themes and lots of lamb carnage.

Atlus may have published Demon's Souls in America, but the Japanese publisher has yet to release an internally developed game for an HD console. That will change in Japan this Winter with Catherine, an original PS3 and Xbox 360 action adventure game from the Persona team.

In Catherine, you play as Vincent, a fashionable 32-year-old with no ambitions in love or work. One day, Vincent meets the game's titular character, Catherine, and is instantly charmed by her. Catherine is Vincent's ideal type.

After this chance meeting, Vincent begins having strange nightmares. From what we can tell based off early details from Atlus, the nightmares are where much of the game will take place. Vincent finds himself in a mysterious world of unending stairs and countless bipedal lambs. He's in his underwear, and he seems to be turning into a lamb himself.

Vincent learns from one lamb (they talk too, apparently) that he has to climb the stairs or die. This is probably apparent to him from the start, though, as there's a giant set of hands pursuing Vincent and his fellow sheepmen. One of the hands is holding a blood-covered fork!

We're not sure at present what exactly Vincent does in the dream world as he climbs the stairs, making his way to the top and out of the dream world. However, it does looks like you'll be visiting the dream world multiple times. Screenshots show Vincent waking up beside Catherine, back in the real world.

As you can probably tell from our screenshot collection, Catherine has some adult themes. It's not an adult game, though -- just very suggestive.

Key staff members of the group that brought us Persona are working on the game. This includes Katsura Hashino as producer and director, Shigenori Soejima as character designer, and Shouji Meguro as sound composer. In comments shared with Famitsu this week, the three confirmed that the game will have more adult leanings than their past titles.

They also explained that the reason they chose something other than a certain RPG as their first HD game is because they wanted to try out something new. That "certain RPG" is, of course, Persona. Meguro hinted that we'll be able to hear about the next entry in the Persona series, presumably Persona 5, some time next year.

But for now, Catherine and Vincent are going to introduce us to what the Persona team is capable of when working with an HD console. Japan gets the game this Winter. A release outside of Japan has yet to be announced.
