I'm guessing that you're too young to remember when Hammer & Ice were selling tens of millions of albums, and the media were passing them off as REAL hip hop.
The period of time crystalized for many that sales could never be used as a standard for the art of MCing.

Seriously though, if Lupe were to make a public service announcement tonight and claim that he was the most lyrically and conceptually skilled rapper of all time, who would be able to stand up and prove him wrong?
Who could you really see being like, "Nah kid, I'm better than you", and be Right?

No, I'm quite interested in your counter opinion, which is why I welcomed it.
And I never asked for proof, I'm well aware of how subjective these things are.
I'm more interested in the criteria you've used to develop your opinion and how well your candidates meet that criteria versus Lupe.
I've simply expressed my disbelief in popularity & influence being a reasonable defense, but you're more than welcome to disagree.
Don't be so quick to dismiss subjective conversation. More often than not it's more about why you think what you do as opposed to what you think. -
Lupe may shy away from beef but batlle ? is not new to dude because thats what he use to do. I remember this interview he did where he said he use to rap like any other ? , AVERAGE, but then he decided if he was gonna go big time he didnt wanna be like everyone else.
