I thought so, but when I look it up, it appears to come up as real. Real people look into it and everything checks out. Although, the producers do manipulate the storyline a little, such as changing who originally contacts MTV/Catfish.
I haven't really been able to find out that it's all legitimately fake. What links you got? -
